Over the past several decades, Saudi Arabia has transformed and adapted drastically. It has changed from a fundamental simple society, to a consumer driven technological boom. The tent, camel, and mudhouse lifestyle has changed to cement high rise buildings, cars, dishwashers, television, and all the modern technology today’s society has.
With the large change in city infrastructure, pace of life, and daily necessities; family and individual culture changed as well. According to Sharif Elmusa, this technological shift is also a “cultural instrument, mediation between the individual and the world, a way of ordering the world. It presents the Saudis with the alternative modes or paradigms of perception and action that challenge their own indigenous, traditional cultural norms.”
There are many scientists that have several views on the recent cultural change. On one side of the spectrum, it is thought that the new presence of technology will increase the longevity of the nation and will be able to increase its nation’s wealth with new mediums of commerce. This side of the spectrum is very realistic and has the nation’s best interests in mind. This will increase the amount of jobs that are available in the nation as well as bring a new lifestyle to families and businesses that they probably did not imagine themselves being a part of.
With this change in ideologies, also brings a change in cultural integrity. Etiquette changes with daily life. How families and individuals interact changes as well as how businesses interact with each other, inside or outside of the country. A faster paced lifestyle is now visible. Saudi Arabia is commonly known for its strict moral values and customs regarding religion and women. Gender discrimination is a global conflict but it is prevalently seen in Saudi Arabia. Gender discrimination is so poignant in Saudi Arabia because there are strict sets of moral guidelines and ideologies that Saudi Arabian culture implements on its people. Although Saudi Arabian men impose restrictions on women for the sake of upholding their cultural beliefs and family’s honor, there is no doubt that Saudi Arabian culture is male dominated and holds misogynistic views on women, but progress is being made.
“Our Future Selves” by Eric Schmidt and Jared Cohen construct views on countries’ technologies that changes the world on a daily basis. Conversely, technologies reconstruct countries in various simpler ways to live throughout economic trends. Furthermore, the quality of life is massively changing with new technologies. Consequently, wealthy countries are viewed differently from poor countries towards technological advantages. Ordinarily, technologies have made the difficult obstacles so much easier than just by hand. Industries have utilized the advanced technologies to provide huge manufacturing productivity. In this study, I aim to determine the effects of globalization on Middle Eastern society, particularly that of Iran. By globalization, I mean the expansion of influence via growing global economies, particularly that of the west, and its unique and very common interaction with the Middle East. Aside from economical expansion, I also include military, political and cultural expansion, or globalization, by that of western cultures and states onto Middle Eastern societies. Cultural expansion can be an effect of economic globalization, as well as military presence in or around a said area. International politics also play a role in affecting cultures, as politics are quite intertwined with economics and military action. Economically, globalization has caused the distribution of wealth to shift dramatically. This is due to many causes, but the oil industry in particular is the source of much of the changes in Middle Eastern society. Iran is no exception, with the oil industry casting a great shadow on the nation’s economy. Obviously, the oil industry also dominates the global economy, therefore bringing many different factors into the Middle East. The pursuit of a “competitive business environment”, international business and political pressures combined with internal and international cultural conflicts, military presence and international image all play huge roles in impacting society. I will be exploring these three variables: GDP, Effect(s) on culture, and rate of growth.
When I was around the age of 13-16, I used to be obsessed with the Saudi romantic novels that I read online. They weren’t published nor edited, but I was blown away by them nonetheless. I have only been to the Saudi kingdom once when I was around 7, and barely remember that visit. Saudi Arabia has developed rapidly in all sectors because of information and communication technology. ICT has significant impact in all sectors of economy of Saudi Arabia. It has also enabled the government to implement strategies that benefit citizens in terms of information technology that has led to high GDP and economic growth. The desert land that Saudi Arabia is known for has faded to an ICT hub. This is because of the strategic value that information technology has provided the country is insurmountable. Kingdom of Saudi Arabia exposes children to ICT at an early age through introduction of information and communication technology in schools so as to prepare them for the complex technological society that awaits them later in life.
Today, Americans are faced with the increasing change of technology in our everyday life. Sometimes the change happens and we do not realize how it affects our lives. I think it is always a good idea to talk to someone that is older than yourself, like your grandparents to remind you of the times in their younger years.
