In life everyone looks for a certain set of characteristics in a person in order to call them their hero. These characteristics vary from person to person, depending on their moral values. Most people agree that the two most important characteristics of a hero are determination and being able to make sacrifices. Determination is an important characteristic because being an individual with the ability to set certain goals for oneself and achieving these goals leads to the courage of doing whatever it takes to achieve these goals. Having the ability to make sacrifices is also a key characteristic for a hero because, the hero then will not be selfish and will always do things for the greater good regardless of the toll. For example, in the epic poem The Odyssey by Homer, Odysseus demonstrates his ability to make sacrifices the most when he was warned about the dangers Circe brought upon the other men. At this moment Odysseus performed like a true hero and built up the courage inside him to go on his own and free his men, even if it cost him his life. This is shown in Book X, when it states, “Not back there, O my lord! Oh, leave me here! You,even you, cannot return, I know it...But I replied ‘By heaven, Eurylochus, rest here then; take food and wine; stay in the black hull’s shelter. Let me go, as I see nothing for it but to go” (Homer, 173). This shows how Odysseus takes life threatening measures for the benefit of his men.
