STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics; it was designed to help bring these core subjects together in the school education program. The program was developed to lift student engagement, build confidence in these particular learning areas and to support teachers to improve student outcomes (Education council, p. 1, 2015). Goal 1 emphasis’s how STEM education can help develop students’ skills in critical thinking, creativity, problem solving and collaboration. This will allow students to engage with the developing world (Education Council, 2015, pg. 5). STEM education can assist students in there learning’s as well as allowing them the opportunity to explore a wide variety of career possibilities and help them discover their interests. Goal 2 looks at school systems playing a large role in encouraging and building aspiration for students to participate in STEM tertiary levels and STEM-related careers (Education Council, 2015, pg. 5). The National Plan for School Improvement pledges access to a high-quality, high-equity education for every Australian school student, regardless of where they live, where they attend school or their personal circumstances (Marginson, S., Tytler, R., Freeman, B., & Roberts, K. 2013). A recent study of Australian enrolment trends has detailed the continuing decline of Science and Mathematics enrolments in Australian high schools (3P Learning, 2015, pg.3). 3P Learning maintains the opinion that science, technology engineering and mathematics must be a priority for Australia to continue to grow a strong economy (2015). 3P’s solution to this issue has three main objectives:
1. Providing students with rich multi-media learning resources (lessons, assessments & feedback) to foster true understanding; 2. Supporting student achievement through the development of individualised learning pathways;

Today’s college students have the opportunity and freedom to choose their major and their career path. Many factors influence the decision of a college student’s career paths including background, general interests, personal strengths, time commitment, and job outlook. Although many important decisions are made in college, one of the most important is the choice of major and career track. Out of hundreds of majors the science and engineering fields are under-represented by women. Although the numbers of women in science technology, engineering, and mathematics, STEM, majors has been increasing in the past years, women still are in the minority in the STEM fields. In her study, Lona Whitmarsh concluded, “that career opportunities for women have widened,” but “not enough change has occurred to show significant differences between the overall population” (49). It is good that more women are entering these fields, but there are still not enough young women aspiring to fill the gaps. Further statistics show that female representation in engineering continues to be low, “in 2008 only 19 percent of bachelor’s degrees, 22.9 percent of masters, and 14.8 percent of PhDs in engineering were awarded to women” (Bystydzienski 2). Although there has been a general increase of women entering the fields of science and mathematics, overall the numbers are still low, showing that women struggle in pursuing a degree within these fields, and that many factors can lead to a female not choosing to begin or complete college in a STEM major. Women are in the minority of STEM fields.

When I was about 10 years old, I started to watch the Discovery Channel on television. These shows captured my attention and my love for science, and ultimately led me to want to pursue a career in the science field. Then, when I was a freshman in high school, I realized my true love of science from honors Biology and being introduced to the microscope. Now, three years later as a senior in high school, I am continuing my love of science by taking AP Biology. This is why science education is important to the future of our lives and our planet. Where if not for the innovation of science and its cures, we would still be living in the Dark Ages where the simple flu would have killed a family, and smallpox and other diseases caused epidemics and panics. Every day science classes are educating kids on the basics and the higher levels of science. Out of all these kids a few are bound to become doctors and research biologist that will help cure cancer, the planet of harmful pollutions, and more. One might say that science was the one that started the pollution in the first place, but as you can see, it has started to help fix the damage it has caused. Also, science education (although thought impractical by some) surrounds our everyday life and is need to understand some of nature’s simplest things. This is why science education is so important in the 21st century.
