In the novel Roll of Thunder, Hear Me Cry, Cassie and Stacey had a lot of growing up to do. Like when Cassie was in the Mercantile and Cassie started complaining about how Mr. Barnett was helping white people before he was helping T.J. Mr. Barnett kicked Stacey and Cassie out of the store. Then while on the sidewalk, Lillian Jean and Cassie ran into each other. Lillian Jean demanded an apology from Cassie for running into her, then Cassie apologized. That wasn’t good enough for Lillian Jean though, and said that Cassie should walk on the road. That was too much for Cassie though, and she wouldn’t get in the street. Then Mr. Simmes, the father of Lillian Jean, pushed Cassie into the street for not listening to Lillian. Then Big Ma came out of the law firm and Cassie got up and ran to Big Ma. Then they made Cassie apologize and then they got in their wagon and went home. Cassie realized that everyone isn’t always treated the same. She learned that sometimes she needs to keep her thoughts to herself. …show more content…

Due to the fact that the bus kept on splashing them, or forcing them off the road, they decided to deal with the bus themselves. During lunch, they dug a pit that the bus would hit, then filled it with water so it looked normal. After school, they waited in the forest and watched as the school bus ran straight into the hole, and got stuck there. The kids that were riding on the bus were going to have to walk for a while. The kids didn’t tell anyone that they did that to the bus, so they learned how to deal with a secret. They later that night, the night riders were out so they got scared for a second, and possibly, if they knew, could have gotten in a large deal of trouble for doing what they did with the bus. Dealing with the bus is another way Stacey and Cassie had to grow
