Tenzin Palmo Speech -

‘Now is the time to realize that one half of the human race is being rather overlooked and ignored that is the female side, and it is time that men began to include women voices more in their decisions and also try to work a little more into developing the feminine within themselves." These are the words of a woman that so many admire, a buddhist nun that has attained a heightened spiritual status and a Bhikkhu who made a “vow to attain enlightenment in the female form no matter how many lifetimes it takes”.

In January of the year 2000 the first nuns arrived and in 2001 the construction of what is now known as the Dongyu Gatsal Ling Nunnery began which is this sacred building here. .

Palmo is now recognised for her significance to Buddhist tradition. She is considered one of the most prominent female teachers and is appreciated for her vital role in implementing various feminist principles to Buddhism. In February, of 2008 she was appointed the rare title of Jetsunma, which means Venerable Master in recognition of her spiritual achievements and work towards the promotion of female status in Tibetan Buddhism.

In her journeys Palmo was able to appreciate and recognise the intelligence and potential of these Buddhist women. She felt as though there was a widely accepted concept that nuns were just servants to the monks and their families. These prejudices were practiced for centuries despite the Buddha’s true teaching that considered the importance of women in society and emphasised equality in spiritual liberation. Now, because of her efforts there are more and more schools for nuns allowing them to pursue the same educational curriculum as the monks allowing them to flourish which is terribly encouraging for Palmo. She is able to use the teaching of the Buddha and seek guidance from the Dalai Lama who she has been fortunate enough to confide in as seen in this
