This week the two readings for class are from “The Emergence of Islam” by Gabriel Said Reynolds. The two readings center on Muhammad and his life as a biblical prophet from his birth around 570 CE until his death in 632. The first reading outlines his life as a young boy and his journey as he grows older and begins to introduce Islam to his native town of Mecca. As a child there were several instances in which he was publicly recognized as having prophethood. A Christian hermit noticed a cloud above Muhammad’s head as he walked and upon further contact with each other discovered a mark between the prophet’s shoulder blades that was described as, “the seal of prophethood.” This encounter represents Islam as the corrective missing puzzle piece
By the 700s Islam has spread expansively reaching as far west to Spain and as far east to the Indus valley. However reaching that height was not so easy, this is where the methods of expansion come in and help aid Islamic groups as to how they can gain land. Methods perhaps may be the offering of salvation or equality and can go extensively as to conquest and fighting. The most effective way that Islamic groups can gain land was by conquering and force, which we will see as we examine the essay.
It is without a doubt that Muhammad is one of the most influential religious figures of all time, being the figurehead for the fastest growing religion and currently the second most prominent religion in the world. With about 1.6 billion Muslims around the world today (23% of the global population), what is it that made Muhammad so effective, and why did we see such a surge in Islam over the past 14 centuries (DeSilver)? Islam is a very easy religion to gravitate towards, particularly for the underprivileged and downtrodden members of society, but there must be something more happening than just religious ideologies. Muhammad’s military initiative and leadership as a general was necessary in the spread of Islam, because it set the stage for

Paper, a remarkable invention, has truly changed the world. Today, paper is used all day every day, but it was not always such a universal product. It is used for writing, drawing, painting, reading, blowing noses, wrapping presents, insulating houses, and even for currency. Using paper makes life so much easier, and paper even breaks down easily in the environment. People do not often think about how paper got to be so popular and useful, and it is important that they know that the spread of Islamic civilization brought paper to the West. It was actually Muslims who learned how to manufacture paper in large quantities, a technology very important to the spread of ideas in the time of the Golden Age of Islam because paper was important for documents and books. This essay will explore the history of paper, the innovations in paper manufacturing, the spread of paper by the Muslims, and the importance of the spread of paper westward. Paper spread to the West along with the spread of Islam; therefore, paper can be considered when studying the innovations of the Golden Age of Islam because the Muslims are responsible for the spread of the knowledge and technology of paper manufacturing.
From the 8th century to the 12th century, medieval Islam was at the height of its “golden age”. The latter is also referred to as “classical Islam”. Thanks to a documentary entitled Lorsque le Monde parlait Arabe as well as the readings from Buresi’s Geo-histoire de l’Islam, this paper will discuss this “golden age” of Islam, as well as the unique facets of this early Islamic civilization. Two questions arise when observing this subject:
Have you ever seen or been someone that heard of a terrorist attack and automatically assumed that it was the Islamic Nation? Islamic persecution has been happening for a long time, even before the tragic events that happened on September 11, 2001. The Islams have recently been blamed for many of the current terrorist attacks. Isis is an Islamic organization that has been committing many terroristic activities, which leads for many people to believe that all Muslims are terrorists. The Islamic Nation is being mistreated from the events that happened on The World Trade Center's, affiliation with Osama Bin Laden and Isis, as well as common terrorist attacks.
Islam is a religion initially spread by the prophet Muhammad. Muhammad had received the message from God while meditating and took the messages he received to birth the religion Islam (Doc A). Islam can be seen all over the world, from the United States to Asia. Muslims make up 20% of the world population and most Muslims are outside the Middle East (Doc H). A good example showing how far Islam spread is in places such as Africa where the mosque of Dejeme can be found (Doc C). This expansion of Islam can be explained by conquest, appeal to the people, and geography.
In an era filled with limited backbone and unethical decision making, comes the events leading up to the birth of Islam. Islam will fill the void the people needed in that region at that time. Islam impacted the Middle Eastern region in many ways, it affected the people’s way of living and their cultures in a positive way. Where the people then flourished and boomed into something a lot bigger and better then what they were before. Many changes occur in this era, changes for the better. It can be perceived as a culture shock to those who first interact with this forming of a new society and religion.
