Rhetoric of Humor Project Humor is an intriguing aspect of our life that makes us happy when we are sad, and keeps us upbeat when with friends. The title that I chose was the Broadway performance from Will Ferrell in Will Ferrell: You 're Welcome America. A Final Night with George W. Bush. Will Ferrell portrays the 43rd President of the United States, George W. Bush, as he reflects on a variety of incidents and occurrences that happened while serving the United States from 2001-2009. The humor speaks primarily to people who are politically savvy and especially know the major points in Bush’s presidency. Ferrell highlights key points such as Hurricane Katrina, the 2000 Presidential election, and the inauguration of President Barack Obama. In “You 're Welcome America,” the target audience is political savvy individuals who are well informed with politics and followed the Bush presidency closely. The humor most associated with this material is stand-up comedy, and irony with a few political jokes smashed in between, with Will Ferrell proving his worth cracking jokes as the wiseass George W. I feel like if I was able to tell people what the jest of the jokes were while watching people would appreciate the play a bit more than if they didn’t know anything about it. Overall though this is a great Broadway adaption from nothing pretty much, and Will Ferrell really solidifies his role as one of the world’s funniest actors and comedians at the same time. Looking back, America was a good place and we were pretty safe after 9/11, it was great looking back on those eight years of his presidency, and we can only hope the next president can deliver something special
A president has to have character, right? I mean, if the leader of the free world has no substance, nothing special about him, then how do we as citizens know that he is capable as far as foreign policies go. How do we know that we can trust him to make wise decisions? How do we know that he will tell us the truth? This concept is exactly what fictional president Andrew Shepherd successfully conveys in his “Address to the Press on Bob Rumson and the Crime Bill.” In the movie, The American President, Andrew Shepherd becomes romantically involved with crime bill lobbyist Sydney Ellen Wade. Many characters, including Bob Rumson, believe that the relationship between Shepherd and Wade is hindering the advancement of the country. They believe that this relationship shows lack of character, and it is made apparent to Shepherd through the side comments and actions of those opposing him. In the closing scenes of the movie, Shepherd is found defending himself and his character through the form of a rhetorical speech. He convincingly uses pathos to appeal to his audience’s sense of nationality and pride.
In the movie, the three main types of comedy I recognized were farce, parody, and satire. Farce is comedy designed to provoke the audience into simple, hearty laughter and often uses highly exaggerated or caricatured character types and puts them into improbable and ludicrous situations. It also makes use of broad verbal humor and physical horseplay. Some examples of farce in the movie are:

His show also demonstrates political satire by telling jokes and even impersonating political figures for the audience. He creates humor through sarcasm that focuses on real issues. His sarcastic humor causes others to feel more confident in their criticism toward politicians. For example, “Jimmy Fallon expresses his humor about Donald Trump, impersonating his appearance and imitating his voice while talking about politics. He uses his humor by impersonating Donald Trump and his sweeping generalizations with Madea (Rogo).” Jimmy Fallon shows people his views through humor and it creates a sense of community to express their agreeable and disagreeable views. Most people would agree that humor makes more of an impression than stern speeches or passages. For example, if someone were to mention the name “Rudy Giuliani” who is the third most famous speaker in our era, most average people would not recognize the man or know of his title. However, if someone were to mention “George Carlin” who was one of the most famous comedians in the 80’s and 90’s before his untimely passing, there would be many a person who would comment on his broad views and humorous remarks that made his points even more valid than the remarks of most present-day politicians. ... immensity of its horror finally makes him drop the pretense of knowing detachment he has held for so long. As he drunkenly sobs, “What’s funny? What’s so goddamned funny? I don’t get it” (Ch. 2, 23) his lurking humanity becomes evident. The subtly of interplay between The Comedian’s persona, his humanity, and even his hypocrisy strongly support his status as a living person alongside Dr. Manhattan.
My least favorite aspect of this play was the ending. The ending confused me and was anticlimactic. It was not funny and not entertaining at all.
I also think that most of the jokes in the movie were hit-or-miss. The good funny jokes balanced out the less successful ones. Basically, the parodies of The Ring and Signs were hilarious, but I definitely could have dealt without anything pertaining to 8 Mile or The President. These jokes just were not funny; they did not seem to blend very well with the other movies. In the first two of the series, the jokes were coming at you constantly.
Comedian Jon Stewart gives a speech on the Daily Show during the “Rally to Restore Sanity/Fear”. He wants the viewers of the Daily Show to realize the difference between the real and fake threats and to take a humorous perspective on most of America’s “problems”. Stewart also emphasizes to his audience not to take every person on the media by his word and not to overreact to everything they hear. He uses metaphors, comparisons, and hypothetical examples to get his point across.
Humor can come in many different forms. Many people are aware of the blatant humor of slapstick, but it takes a keener mind to notice the subtle detail in sarcasm or satire. In A Modest Proposal, Jonathan Swift was able to create a piece of literature addressing the faults of the Irish culture while embedding in a humorous essay. Swift’s satire allows for the gravity of the Irish standings to be exploited under the disguise of a proposal for economic benefit.
Similar to many other lively pleasures, humor can only be experienced if it resonates with a person. Without some kind of comprehension, there cannot be any type of reaction. Only once an outlandish statement, inappropriate remark, or unexpected situation, is remotely understood will a person be able to label it comical or sober. Since there are billions of people worldwide with their own languages including it’s respective idioms, euphemisms, the age old saying of “there is truth in every joke” applies to each culture individually.
The nature of comedy has always left it somewhat resistant to critical analysis, and to some extent the same can be said for comedic actors. The class-clowns of Hollywood like Will Ferrell are often times constructed as being nothing more than amusing, so they seem like a simple case study.... ... middle of paper ... ...
