Bullying at Prince Edward High School is an important topic because schools and parents must educate children about bullying behaviors; it will help all children feel safe and secure at school. As a soon to be intern at a school as a school social worker this affects me deeply. I want to be able to walk down the hall hearing positive language towards each and every student. There is so much that schools can to do stop bullying beginning with teaching kids to speak up and stop the oppressive acts. Children and adolescents in school need to be taught that even if they are not doing the bullying themselves, simply watching an incident without informing someone of authority or doing nothing to help the victim makes them guilty by association. While meeting with the guidance counselor at Prince Edward the administration agreed that there is a significant amount of bullying that occurs throughout the high school. It is reported that the bullying occurs in all of the class levels. The guidance counselor also informed us that the staff and teachers don’t really know exactly how to handle the bullying and there is also a lack of respect between the staff and the students. The guidance counselor said that there is a lot of bullying between the different races in in the school because of the racial divide in the school. She also said that one of the biggest forms of bullying that occurs in the school is cyberbullying. The staff also has a lack of knowledge as to how to help the bullying issues in the high school. By the end of this project the teachers and staff should have an idea of what a child who has to endure bullying usually suffers from, being low self-esteem and their ability to learn and be successful at school dramatically lessens; so therefore that may be a reason why they do not seem to be trying as hard in the classroom. Up to this point support and time are things we require from the school, so far they have only been resistant due to poor communication on their end. Then we would review our plan as well as permission from the principal to set up the actual anti-bullying week. For each day of the week we would have a different activity related to bullying. The first day we would have the students and staff wear their school colors to show how they are united and to show how they care for each other and Prince Edward and have someone in the office make random announcements throughout the day of encouraging quotes made by famous people they would know. One day we were planning on having students make posters against bullying as well as encouraging notes to post around the school. On one of the days we also had an idea to have the students each create a piece of creative writing such as a poem speaking out against bullying or a story or skit teaching bystanders how to help. One of the days we plan on handing out candy with encouraging notes on them, pins and arm bands that say “be a buddy not a bully.” For the last day we would have students put their hand print on a banner against bullying to hang in the school as a representation of hands against
