What is Canadian culture ? To me Canadian culture can be seen almost as a cultural mosaic with many different ethnic groups and cultures all co-existing together in one society. Culture is a vast term that describes customs, traditions, and all other institutions. Though, Canadian culture I believe cannot have a permanent definition as we are constantly changing. However, as of right now canadian culture is a country of immigrants from multiple different ethnic backgrounds making up one nation. There is not one definite culture or ethnic group in Canada rather multiple cultural groups. The first culture and ethnic group to ever exist in Canada was the aboriginals who lived here centuries before Europeans found Canada. Therefore this particular culture was largely influenced by the first European settlers better known as the French Canadians. (UOttawa,2013) Though the biggest influence came from the British whose culture dominated Canada until other immigrants from different ethnic groups brought about their culture. Western culture is still prevalent in today’s society. Many of our fashion trends and forms of entertainment are still influenced by western nations in Europe. The liberals plan on welcoming 25,000 refugees from Syria and Iraq through immediate, direct sponsorship. Though some had thought that welcoming so many refugees would lead to conflict among Canadians but the opposite occurred. Canadians have openly welcomed this new ethnic group. This shows that we as a country are now more welcoming now than we ever have been. Furthermore, I believe this is because more Canadians have immigration roots now than they did several decades ago. Along with that Canada is setting an example for other countries looking to help with the Syrian refugee crisis. “People close to refugee issues follow Canada’s efforts closely.
