Becoming a Registered Nurse, or an RN, has always been a dream for me. I grew up learning all about the career from my mother, a nurse herself. From an early age, I knew I wanted to help people and make a difference in someone’s life. Now that I am in college, I am learning so much more about the career and how to actually become a nurse. Nurses are such an important part of the medical field. Some say they even do more than doctors. It is an extremely hard career because a nurse must demonstrate many different unique skills, be able to work in many different work environments, handle stress the right way, and know that many lives hang in their hands. It is a hard, but vital job. I know that I look up to and respect all nurses, and I hope that one day I can become one as well. A Registered Nurse needs to have many skills. As a nurse you can work in a hospital, a doctor 's office, in a nursing home, a clinic, such as a Walgreens or CVS, in a school, a jail, a camp, on an airplane or helicopter, and even in a war zone (Ruesink). There are so many different types of environments for a nurse, that there is something for everyone. No matter where a nurse works, there is always a high level of social contact. A nurse gets up close and personal with their patients, sometimes having to get a little too personal. Nurses frequently have to deal with unpleasant people no matter where they decide to work. There will always be someone who thinks they know more than the nurses and doctors, or someone who has come straight from a jail or a patient who has severe mental problems. All nurses, no matter the environment, are exposed to diseases and infections.
