Through the course of this year writing essays have not been the easiest thing for me. I continue to try and improve, but I always fall short someway or somehow. There have been many struggle to get ideas about a paper and most significant is my grammar errors. Some of the papers I have done have been uncomplicated and smooth to write about. Through this year I had been developing my writing skills, but not as fast as I should. Throughout my year I have been shown many strengths and weaknesses in my writing and continue to improve on my writing. In these semesters I have been able to strengthen my writing and continue to help my strengths grow. In writing everyone has many strengths and weaknesses no matter who they are. My strengths in writing have been organization. I like to make sure that things progress and flow together. Also, I try to uses various words in my writing, so I am not repetitive. I need improvements on grammar, not using pronouns, and dragging on essays. Seeing my essays combined, I want to continue to look over them and take note on what to look out for. I plan to make a list of my common mistakes to check if I made the repeated mistakes. Also, my essays have made improvements throughout the quarters. As I look on my essays from beginning to end some mistakes stop appearing such as my grammar errors, structure, and vocabulary. Furthermore, I would not say writing is the most exciting subject to me. Writing has always been a struggle to me and I want to continue in writing to help me grow. In the same way reviewing past essays can help me grow as a writer in seeing my mistakes and learning from them. Next year I will have these past essays as a guide to help me correct my future
Writing essays was never my forte, it just never came easy to me like it would to others. Since other subjects came easy to me and I had to focus more than others on writing, I had a negative attitude toward the process as a whole. During this summer semester, I was able to grow as a writer, and gain a more positive attitude toward how I write and a better feel for writing in college. Writing a paper is a process in which there are many different stages. In high school I would never write outlines or any sort of pre planning work. Other struggles I encountered in my writing were my theses, and framing quotes.
As a collegiate writer, my strength lies in my clear understanding of the fundamentals of writing, while my primary weakness is proofreading my own work. During the transition from a high school writer to a collegiate writer, my strength at understanding the basic principles of good writing has remained consistent. I grasp the fundamental structure of an argument; I believe that my thesis statements are a solid example of this fact.
At the beginning of the semester in Eng 121, I knew that there would be much to learn and many areas to improve. In high school I was not a strong writer, so taking Eng 121, in my first semester of college, was intimidating. Yet I quickly adjusted and was able to grow as a writer. My greatest accomplishment was understanding myself as a writer, because of this I quickly learned my weaknesses and strengths. After I learned my weaknesses I was able to prevent or go back and fix my mistakes, this allowed me to improve my writing immensely. Luckily, over the past few months I was able to learn the new 8th edition of MLA and identify my weaknesses, such as writing clear and concise sentences. The papers I chose to submit are ones of which I was able to prevent or correct mistakes I knew that I struggled with as a writer because of my Eng 121 class.
In my opinion, over the years, my current writing skills have improved. Beforehand, I used to have difficulties understanding the proper format of sentences and had dragged sentences on. However, my current writing skills are becoming more developed. The composition of my writing has become more concise, clear, and understandable. Furthermore, some of the dominant skills my writing demonstrates is; avoiding slang, jargon, and transitions. With each of these skills in mechanical writing, my papers have become more advanced, more concise, and able to follow the primary goal. So, from these writing mechanics, my personal writing has matured. This allows my personal writing to evolve further. Nevertheless, my current writing skills have improved by becoming more concise, clear and understandable.
As a writer there are many elements of writing that I struggle with, especially when composing an essay. When writing an essay, there are usually many skills that need to be used in order to be successful with the writing assignment. Many times in writing I struggle with explaining and fully developing the supporting details and ideas in my essay. I would also like to improve on incorporating clear topic sentences and concluding sentences, connecting my paragraphs ideas back to my thesis. Lastly, improvement can be made in my writing by avoiding awkward or wordy sentences. Writers face numerous challenges in their writing but strive to overcome or improve these challenges with each piece they write.
Over the years of my schooling, I have gradually developed my writing preparation to help me become a better writer. I continue to find ways to improve my writing abilities by working on my weaknesses and by incorporating the feedback I receive from my peers and my instructors into my essays. At times, I still struggle when preparing to start my essay, but with precise and organized planning and obtaining the help of others, I am certain that I will become more proficient in my writing
Throughout this semester we have had to write many types of essays. Although this is a college English class there is still room for improvement. I made much improvement during the semester of the class. I was able to identify my weaknesses. I learned how to make improvements to the areas I was having problems in. Although each essay we did was different I was able to begin with one essay and throughout the semester turn it into two other essays. I was able to change my style of writing to fit the type of audience I was working with. I will continue to work on my writing and keep improving it.
The primary strength in my writing is the structure. To be concise with wording comes effortlessly to me, and therefore I do not ramble on to tangents. Another strength of mine is writing about topics that interest me. In these cases I can spill all my thoughts out onto paper and do not need to worry about having enough sentences. At the start of this class, I made a goal to develop my writing skills to better prepare me for other courses for my degree. I knew English 106 would be different compared to any other English or college courses that I have taken. I knew English 106 environment will let me grow in diverse writing dimensions. My long serving years of experience in the military has exposed me to many cultures around the globe. In just seven weeks of the course, I have seen some improvement in my writing. This course has afforded me with several techniques that have made writing not only a little bit easier but also more in-depth resulting in a higher level of academic writing versus my normal military style writing. Writing is an important part of everyone’s life, whether we use it in school, in the workplace, as a hobby or in personal communication. It is important to have this skill because it helps us as writers to express feelings and thoughts to other people in a reasonably permanent form. Formal writing forms like essays, research papers, and articles stimulates critically thinking. This helps the writer to learn how to interpret the world around him/her in a meaningful way. Writing for me has always been a love and hate relationship since I could remember. Depending on the subject matter that I was writing about I would enjoy it because it suited my style or I loathed it because that specific style was uninteresting and boring to me. Learning certain writing formats were absolutely the worst part about writing when I first started learning in high school. As time pushed on and I grew older I began to develop an appreciation for writing that I did not have before; which is what led me to taking Writing 101 as my first full-fledged college course. I began this course with minimal writing experience because of what I failed to retain before, but now I am a stronger writer than I could have imagined with new skill sets that enhance my professional portfolio.
Writing about my personal strengths is a challenging task that requires me to focus on the strong points that make up my character. However, to attack my weaknesses, is to challenge myself to take control over the areas that need some redefining of certain skills to make greatest success in life. My life is not defined by weaknesses, but more so the makeup of my personal strengths.
Though it isn 't just about the writing that has captivated me over the course period, it is the fact that I had to undergo an evolution of what I considered to be okay in writing. Things I found to be passable are now considered to be mediocre in the expense that I did not pay attention to the small bits of detail there was. Before taking English 1A, I was a discouraged writer because as an English learner, I did not believe that I had any ability to be an acceptable writer. Therefore, I did not have any joy while I was doing writing assignments. However, I have gradually loved writing through this semester. I fortunately got plenty of helps from my classmates and professor; thus, my writing skills have gotten improved a lot. I currently can feel that writing is a quite enjoyable process, and I like delivering my ideas to other people by writing, too. I am really proud that I have enhanced my pre-writing skills, writing structure and revising skills and have learned how to write an effective thesis statement and how to deal with rhetorical analysis. However, I still have lots of deficiencies in my articles, such as grammar problem and the lack of logical transition.
As I stated in my previous reflective essay, I hated writing in grade school. I sucked my teeth and groaned every time my teachers assigned an essay for homework. I don’t actually hate writing. I just disliked it because I never excelled in it. I wrote just to get the job done, but never took the time to pay attention to the writing process and the other aspects of writing. As I grew older and got a career, I realized how important writing was in the real world. From friends revising your status updates on Facebook that were plagued in grammatical errors or writing a professional email to your boss, writing skills are crucial to the real world.
