Writing Reflection What is improvisation? I understand this concept as creation without pre planning. To create something completely new and never seen before, just to respond to how you are feeling in the moment. I see improvisation, as a series of spontaneous movements that can just come trough your mind and body, in the moment something inspired you. I want to talk about this specific skill that we practice in class, because it makes me see dance with a very different perspective, and a wider view. It makes me reflect in how important is improvisation, how every specific dance step was in the past an improvisation step, invented by someone and that now is considered as “ordinary” or “aesthetic”. Maybe this depends on what you practice, or what your are used to. I have practiced cheerleading since I have 8 years, more than 10 years on this amazing sport, where practice, precision and constant are the key elements to succeed. In this sport a simple mistake, because of lack of practice can take you to the hospital and even to death. Cheerleading has not chance for improvisation, every movement in the routine, has to have a lot of dedication before being in a stage and present it. Practice make perfection, and cheerleading is what is trying to achieve. Always being better, and do it always once more time even when it’s already perfect, for then make a new thing. I think this is a very big aspect of why I don't like improvisation, because I really appreciate all the hard work and time of dedication that cheerleadings do in their trainings. I know they are very different skills, and that cheerleading is a sport and improvisation art, and that maybe they can’t being compared in that way, but it doesn't seems fair to me, to just appear in a stage and do whatever you like and call it art where no preparation or training is required. Because if we think it, nothing new ever happens if you keep doing the same thing as everyone else. I strongly believe that without creativity a piece of work becomes completely useless and that each idea must have an aspect of creativity otherwise it is completely unimportant. Reading a little about improvisation I find this cite: "Life is not about finding yourself, it's about creating yourself" - George Bernard Shaw. It really impact me, it’s like a little summary of how I understand improvisation. Unlike gymnastics, you must rely only on yourself to do what you need to do to win. Relying on the rest of your team, cheerleading is a much harder team sport. Gymnastics does have a team score but it only takes the top three scores form each event for the team score. Gymnast must perform wonderful but if they do not then they are the ones to blame. Cheerleading, the most team oriented team sport, relies on multiple people to get one job done.

At the beginning of the twentieth century, European powers were in the process of mobilizing for the first world war after years of global imperialism, and the United States, after temporarily resolving the problems of Reconstruction and Industrialization, began to resume the course of expansion reaching out toward Asia and the Pacific. This era was consumed by limited choices in popular culture and dance, yet several dances began to emerge as a dominant form of art other than ballet. Born in 1878 to 1968, Ruth St. Denis was an American dancer renowned as a founder of modern dance, a sensational performer, and influential teacher. St. Denis was a pioneer in American modern dance and was able to successfully explore dance forms from diverse world religious and spiritual expression. She became very interested in the dancing techniques and emotions of Eastern cultures and created her own theory of dance based upon all of her early training, performers she worked with, and her reading on mythology and various cultures. She was equally influenced by philosophy, cultural history, and contemporary art. In particular, St. Denis was enamored with spirituality and the orient. For example, St. Denis learned about Buddhism, and the immediate context of spirituality inspired her to translate this energy in to choreographic practices that merged spiritual rituals with dance and movement . One of her earliest pieces, Incense, was first performed in 1906 in New York’s Hudson Theater. Incense is based upon the Hindu ritual of puja, in which an individual worships the deities with offerings of flowers, fruit and incense . New Dance is described as a developing art form; this dance was articulated in the early 20th century. According to Chapter 8 in History of Dance book, “the new dance emerged as a response to the ballet that populated the variety shows and music halls, which had a rigid formula of steps and poses” (Kassing). The New Dance was a product of several strands that interlaced together dancers’ studies and backgrounds; these strands and others were woven together in a historical, political, and societal framework. For instance, one strand of New Dance consisted of the concepts, techniques, costumes, and stage settings from around the world. These strands influenced major dancers and choreographers, such as, Isadora Duncan, Loie Fuller, Ruth St. Denis, and Ted Shawn.
In order to be successful cheerleading takes dedication and hard work, we can still have fun, but you need to be focused when the time calls. Of course competitive cheerleading is a sweaty, fun, and overwhelming at times, but aren’t all sports? To think that one thing that changes a team 's overall score for deciding either first or last between the two teams would be hard work and dedication to win the competition. Just like in football, they get that one chance to make a difference and win within a split second do they run or throw. Well does the cheerleader try to save the stunt or is it not worth it. Football players get that one chance to win and cheerleaders get that one chance to make a good impression on the judges. Cheerleaders put in the hard work and dedication through practices like football players. Then the practice football on average 150 days per year, cheerleaders on average practice 226 days a year. Cheerleaders are dedicated, they’ll go through anything to win like Bangaoil. Bangaoil is a cheerleader who, messed up her ACL during cheer practice one day, and for about six months she stayed with her team instead, of going into surgery to help her team win third at the United Spirit Association’s Collegiate Nationals“Last year she spent downing Advil and bathing her knee in ice has been a success. Learning about Dance is particularly useful for those who do not have a wide and diverse dance contextual, such as students in a preliminary level or survey dance course. Dance is displayed through the human body, it has the control to communicate and induce reactions. People used rituals in order to worship the gods and believed that the rituals held magical and spiritual powers. Other periods that had an impact on dance were the medieval period, the renaissance period, and the contemporary period. “Who knows only his own generation remains always a child.” This quote from George Norlin echoes the edification that cultural exposure can offer. How does African dance relate to do modern dance? The two are so heterogeneous in their make-up that one would not think of them as having similarities. The truth, however, is that all dance forms are linked in some way or another; they all strengthen and sharpen each other. Modern dance has its roots in African dance with the emphasis placed on the connection of weight and gravity. Brenda Dixon Gottschild names five aesthetics that are present in African dance. A particular piece that draws attention to the relation of the five aesthetics to modern dance is “Split Sides”, choreographed by Merce Cunningham.
From an outsiders perspective one may see brainless and beautiful robots, which scream and perform neat tricks. This is not the case from the inside; cheerleading is so much more than that. Many people are under the impression that cheerleading is not a sport. I am the voice of reasoning that will let you in, and I will show you that cheerleading, in fact, is a sport. Cheerleading requires much physical demand from the body just as any other sport would. Cheerleading, in general, is a team effort. There are many sides to cheerleading, which make it a versatile sport. When it comes to cheerleading there’s more to it than what meets the eye.
The topic I decided to choose to conduct my Capstone Research on is Copyright in Choreographic Works. Choreography is “Choreographers use dance performances to express ideas and stories. There are many types of dance, such as ballet, tango, modern dance, tap, and jazz (bls.gov). Choreography is also something that should be made from the heart, it’s not something that should be taken from someone else because at that point, it wouldn’t be considered your choreography and it wouldn’t be something you made from your own mind and creativity. Dancing is something you have a passion for and you show your emotions through your movements, so there shouldn’t be a need to copy. Improvisation is the ability to create an unplanned and spontaneous musical excerpt, with the level proficiency being dependent upon prior knowledge. In order to understand the logistics behind improvisation, we must establish the concepts behind it, why we learn and are intrigued by improvisation, whether it is practiced patterns or learned procedures, and whether or not changing from a familiar key to an unfamiliar key limits ones’ ability to improvise. The Northern Territory is known for its culturally diverse population and some would say it is the ‘multicultural hub’ of Australia. With all of these cultures comes distinctive customs and traditions. Throughout history dance has been used to help people develop a sense of identity, the younger generations are also taught social patterns and values through the different dances. The significance of these traditional dances was to reinforce and celebrate cultural law and practices including the celebration of the passage from child to adulthood or spiritual worship. The predominantly Western culture in Australia often causes minority groups to struggle for recognition regarding their beliefs and traditions. Dancing and music in general have evolved through time. People who danced in style in the sixties would not fit n the generation of the new millennium. As years have passed by, it seems the style of dancing is getting to be dirtier than ever. Parents do not approve of this lifestyle and this way of dance. It is inevitable that dance will change throughout our lives and so will its style. Dancing has changed in relation to music, behavior and time passed.
Contemporary dance first originated from ballet, however changed when Isadora Duncan decided that she didn’t want to dance ballet. She disregarded the refined technical Classical ballet and thus the concept of Contemporary dance was born. This style incorporates movements where the body moves freely and doesn’t have restrictions, embodying raw human emotion. Pioneers of contemporary dance comprise of the internationally known Isadora Duncan, Martha Graham and Merce Cunningham (The Conversation, 2014, online) + (Bibliography, 2012, online). These three dancers helped to revolutionise contemporary dance and express their interpretation of it, all unique but added layers to the genre.
