Change is a necessary yet at times, an uncomfortable part of life. This is why thinking about change and sometimes enacting change can be difficult. When I started this internship, I didn’t really think about change to often. When I did, it always seemed to be on a very individual basis and simply how this act will affect me. However, as the internship progressed and I continued doing the reading, my ideas about education changed. I believe my ideas changed for the better because the readings, in particular Freire, broadened my way of thinking. The Freire reading really got me thinking about education and what it means to be educated. Something that hit me like a ton bricks was when Freire stated that education should be more then just subjects …show more content…
While reading this paper I both agreed and disagreed with some of the ideas. His paper “Forget Shorter Showers” emphasizes change on an industrial level while admirable, i’m not sure I really think is attainable. Of course if large corporations changed their habits and began practicing sustainability the world would be in a far better position environmentally then we are now. However, large corporations and industries producing massive amounts of waste whether we like it or not sadly seems to be necessary for this type of way of life. I agree that corporations should absolutely be more mindful and try to reduce their waste. A key issue with Jensen’s piece is that I believe he underestimates the power that individual change has when he states “I don’t pretend that not buying much (or not driving much, or not having kids) is a powerful political act, or that it’s deeply revolutionary. It’s not. Personal change doesn’t equal social change.” I think in order for the industrial change that Jensen is advocating to take place, individual change needs to occur first. I believe sustainability and waste reduction starts with individuals and has the potential to grow exponentially as more and more people begin practicing healthier habits. While reading Jensen’s article I immediately thought of the internship at Natural Bridges. The work being done at Natural Bridges such as restoration is a very good example of …show more content…
I would define community as a group of people working or living together and striving toward a common goal. An important aspect of my definition of community is that people must work together towards a common goal. Having an ultimate goal that everyone can strive towards creates a sense of togetherness and effectiveness. With this definition of community in mind, I believe Natural Bridges creates a strong sense of community. Every staff member was very nice and helpful and we often worked together and were encouraged to work in groups. Because of this, it never felt like I was on the outside and not good enough to help with anything because I was “just” an intern or volunteering. This was a huge reason why I felt connected and a part of the community. Being able to work along side Martha or Abby showed me that I am valued and made me want to work harder to help Natural bridges in any way I can. another reason I felt a part of the community was engaging in conversations with people while on the trails. Talking to people about what I am doing and how it benefits the environment and animals allowed me to realize that people care about issues of environment and sustainability. The fact that people would stop and ask what I was doing or how I liked volunteering at Natural Bridges, made me see that the community expands beyond the workers and volunteers. Being a part of a larger community of both workers and
A community is comprised of a group of goal oriented individuals with similar beliefs and expectations. Currently the term is used interchangeably with society, the town one lives in and even religion. A less shallow interpretation suggests that community embodies a lifestyle unique to its members. Similarities within the group establish bonds along with ideals, values, and strength in numbers unknown to an individual. Ideals and values ultimately impose the culture that the constituents abide by. By becoming part of a community, socialization...
The modern lifestyle, full of one time use items and pollution generating machines, is harming our environment, and, without a plan, the death of our planet is certain. Environmentalist and author, Derrick Jensen uses a comparison of possible outcomes to persuade his readers to take action that would help stop climate change; political resistance is his preferred and recommended course of action for his audience. Throughout his essay, “Forget Shorter Showers”, Jensen makes clear his desire to reduce or even reverse the effects industrialization (476-478). He advocates an approach where society makes changes to industry and to government over the current methods of voluntary
A community is to help and support each other to be successful. Everyone is involved in a certain community regardless of anything. A community I am commit with is CAMP from CSUMB which stands for College Assistance Migrant Program. My community is a federally funded program that assists first year freshmen who have a migrant background and students whose parents are seasonal farmworkers. CAMP assist their students with many useful services such as with a grant of up to 1,200 dollars. My community is very important to me for the reason they are guiding me to be successful while encouraging me to graduate from college. In my community we tend to communicate really often such as in the article "Learning to Serve" by Toni Mirabelli. As in the article, my community also communicates by using various literacy such as writing, reading , and speaking.
Community is defined as a group a people living in an area under the same conditions. Realistically, a community is so much more than this definition. It is people and their different beliefs that form a community. In the town of Milagro, Amarante Cordova, Ruby Archuleta, and a town coming together to rescue a fellow community member from jail exemplify the true spirit of what community is.
I never realized how many variables there were when it comes to all the different ways people learn and get an education. I was raised with public school from pre-school and high school and it is what I am most accustom to, but learning about what else can go into education changed my perspective. The fact that other countries can take education a completely different way made me think about the effectiveness of one type of learning to the other. I feel like people need to think more about how education works and the factors that play into it, while keeping an open mind to new methods or tactics towards learning that may
Community is like a Venn diagram. It is all about relations between a finite group of people or things. People have their own circles and, sometimes, these circles overlap one another. These interceptions are interests, common attitudes and goals that we share together. These interceptions bond us together as a community, as a Venn diagram. A good community needs good communication where people speak and listen to each other openly and honestly. It needs ti...
The term reflection means the examination of personal thoughts and actions. For nurses this means focusing on how they interact with their colleagues and with the environment to obtain a clearer picture of their own behaviour. This means it is a process in which a nurse can better understand themselves in order to be able to build on existing strengths and take appropriate future action (Somerville, 2004). Reflection is a way to bring your own intuition along with empirical knowledge together. Reflective practice in nursing is guided by models of reflection. Reflective practice model serves as a framework within which nursing or other management professions can work. Reflective practice model is also a structural framework or learning model that serves the purposes of a profession and is particularly applicable to health related professions. Reflective practice enables practitioners to learn to value themselves as significant people with values and feelings that are important factors in giving care. Whilst reflective practice allows the nurse to recognise the value of their experiences, they may also need support to work through a difficult situation. This is where reflection aids nurses in dealing with these challenging experiences (Johns, 1995). Reflection on experience offers nurses the opportunity to reflect on caring in practice in ways that its nature can be understood, where the skills necessary for effective caring can be developed and most significantly, where the values of caring for people can be highlighted, both to the individual nurse and the world in general (Johns 1996)
My RIP companion essay was a complete mess with no structure in the first draft. I believe it was because I had procrastinated to complete both the first drafts for the RIP project and essay. I finished my RIP project then moved on to my companion essay, and the transition was vastly different because in the RIP project I was writing for a different audience than in the companion essay, which was an academic audience. In addition, I forgot that we had been given a prompt with specific instructions and guidelines for the companion essay, which gave the structure for the essay. My professor, Delany-Ullman also points out that “For most essays, you should NOT include your textual evidence in your topic sentence. Your topic sentence should make
Over the course of the semester, I feel that I have grown as a writer in many ways. When I came into the class, there were skills I had that I already excelled at. During my time in class, I have come to improve on those skills even more. Before I took this class I didn’t even realise what I was good at. This is the first class where I felt I received feedback on my writing that helped me to actually review my work in see what areas I lacked in and where I succeeded. Some of the skills I had shocked me as I didn’t think I had those capabilities in me.
The education part of change can be the most rewarding. However, if you haven’t noticed life is not one big high school. There is no teacher providing you with every decision you need to make to accomplish something.
How would someone define the word community? A community could be anything. If one were to listen to an everyday conservation, the word community, would probably be used very little. The word community has multiple meanings, ranging from communist or socialistic society (Emerson) to the quality of appertaining to or being held by all in common (Oxford).
“Metathesiophobia” a tongue-tying word for the fear of change—a fear which most people, if honest with themselves, will admit to have experienced. Change, even when relatively minor and even when it is wanted can become unsettling and unnerving—and consequently intimidating. And with fear usually comes stress and resistance. For leaders, fearing or resisting change and hesitating at venturing into the unknown can be their own, their followers’ and their organizations’ undoing. It is a truism of today’s business environment that the only thing which remains the same is change—and change is more abundant, rapid and complex than ever before. Mergers and acquisitions, corporate restructurings or downsizings, increasing globalization and market upheavals are just a few of the dramatic transitions that leaders and their organizations need to deal with at an unprecedented level. Another source of transition is the short life of technology with rapidly increasing rates of obsolescence and replacement requiring individuals and organizations to engage in constant learning processes. In addition to it, the people who make up organizations, work groups, and teams often keep shifting at a breakneck pace. Institutional loyalty is hardly what it was before (the Bureau of National Affairs has recently reported that employee turnover is occurring at the highest rate in nearly twenty years), and it is common for people in organizations to be quickly shuttled in and out of various assignments. Managers’ ability to deal with this type of change—losing well-known team members and working with new and unfamiliar colleagues—has a profound impact on the organizational effectiveness and productivity.
...at previously, sometimes in the midst of a discussion, people forget that there are two sides of a story and not everyone has to agree to yours. What we learn from our books or our studies is not what is necessarily important. What we learn from our peers and our professors is what’s important. Learning is more than absorbing fact, it is acquiring understanding, and it is being passionate about the material you are given. Each piece that we have read in class, and each comment that we make impacts a person no matter how little it seems. The education systems focuses too much about effective methods of teaching and not enough about effective methods of learning. However, this course felt like we were learning something instead trying to finish the curriculum. As Albert Einstein once said, “education is not the learning of facts, but the training of the mind to think”.
John W. Gardner said, “Much education today is monumentally ineffective. All too often we are giving young people cut flowers when we should be teaching them to grow their own plants.” Education today is very ineffective. It is in an in between phase of the ways of old and a time of complete reform. The main issue is that people often lose sight of why the education system should even be reformed. It shouldn’t be reformed because “that’s what everyone else is doing.” It needs to be reformed to bridge the gap for the students who have a different learning style. It should be reformed to expand knowledge for students. Education reform can have good and bad effects. Because the education system is very complex, educators are being faced with changes and they must decide what is best for students.
Everyone has their own perception of an ideal community. For each person the factors of an ideal community will vary depending on their upbringing. My understanding of a community is a place where a group of people live, and socialize. Everyone is caring, thoughtful, and respectful. In my community people take care of each other they think before they act, and are respectful to one another keeping in mind equality.
