WRA 150 Reflection
Overall in WRA 150 I believe my writing has reached a new level. In this paper I will like to reflect on my learning in this course. While providing evidence to back my claims. This course has taught me many things that I wasn’t able to learn before reaching college.
During this course I found myself being intimidated. Being a student coming from an inner city high school. I wasn’t sure what to expect, for example when it came to writing a nine page research paper, I was unsure of the process. In high school I never encountered a research paper, or even one of such length.

In the portfolio you can see two pieces of evidence that shows my development in this area. The first piece is a two page essay about who my audience is in project2.In this essay I didn’t have the correct audience for my project. Therefore I made some revisions, which is the second piece of evidence.
In class we discussed how to start a paper, transition and paragraph efficiently .First, in this discussion I learned it’s not best to start your paper writing your intro first. Only because it can mess everything up once you start writing if you don’t focus on your central claim in the intro.
Second, throughout your paper you should be able to transition smoothly like icing on a cake. The reference to cake was provided as a visual of how you put icing on different layers of cake to make it connect. Like project four, I found the weirdest because it switched up the whole writing process. Although it switched everything up it helped to hone some of the first year writing outcomes for me.
Reflecting back on the course I have honed a few of the first year writing outcomes. I have written a nine page research paper, where I had to find my research and pick and choose what information to use that would be beneficial. I have engaged in reading articles and speeches, while breaking them down to understand the true meaning of what the author was trying to communicate to the audience. In addition I have written in different genres to relate to an audience.
On another note while learning all these wonderful things I also enjoyed the class as a whole. The class was interesting and but challenging. Even though we didn’t have enough time to learn more, I believe I still learned a lot of information .Each class session brought something new to learn, in an exciting way. This class helped me to think in a different way, through its class discussion, readings, and writing
From the beginning, the first writing project assigned in class, a proposal, exposed to me the essential tools a writer needs to connect to the proper audience and defend my stance on the reform proposed. Overall, the course not only stressed the importance of drafts, but of peer review and instructor feedback as well; therefore, strengthening my knowledge
At the beginning of the quarter, I had preconceived notions as to what "good" writing looked like, and how I should formulate it. I found that to be successful in this class, I had to leave my thoughts from high school at the door and start from scratch. I quickly came to understand, for example, that a thesis statement is completely different than a claim. This was a big issue for me as I was confident in my thesis-writing abilities at the beginning of the quarter. However, when I received multiple papers back regarding my claim, I was discouraged. Although I didn't have any specific goals for my own writing at the beginning of the course, this immediately became a goal for me to work towards. Throughout this course, we had multiple assignments that were aimed at improving us as writers. I am sure that everyone took something different from this course, and I am sure that each student took more from some areas than others; however for me there were three major things that I saw that I benefited from most. Our weekly craft lessons, grammar plan, but most of all, observational learning. Our weekly craft lessons have introduced us to multiple writing strategies. These strategies have helped turn my papers from elementary papers that were written below my expected grade level to papers more on par with my peers.
In this semester, I had to take the English 1301 course. However, I did not see myself liking this course and did not have the best attitude towards it. This course changed my overall experience with writing. In the course I gained so much knowledge that I did not see myself learning. This essay will help analyze my experience throughout the entire journey. It will help understand how I became the writer I am today. Over the last several weeks, I have grown into a great writer that I did not see myself as.
When demonstrating my growth as a writer across several pieces, there are four main learning outcomes in which I have focused on. These include writing, reading, researching and reflecting. Within these learning outcomes, there are many different conventions and ways to understand my various projects and assignments as a writer. Throughout the English 1020 class, I have been able to observe not only my previous strengths, but myself growing as a writer by improving my ability to find strong sources as well as properly citing and explaining them, forming a more logical paragraph structure, and many more conventions when writing an assignment.
...thout any evidence. To fix this, I added more resources, evidence, and information to support these claims. My paper would not be believable if the claims were not supported with evidence. One example of where I fixed this problem was in the cheating paragraph. I added a statistic to boost my claim and give myself more credibility on what I was talking about. Another example of where I added evidence was in the paragraph about technology lowering college costs. Before, this paragraph was just statements and claims. To correct this, I added more information with evidence to show that this claim was true. Overall, I made a great deal of revision based on knowledge that I gained after writing this paper. These revisions include fixing grammatical errors, adding or removing information, removing wordiness and repetition, and adding more evidence to support my claims.
This is my first year here at Porterville College, I can say that I have learned many new things. Things that I wanted to learn, that seemed interesting to me, and more important that I was able to do was connect somethings that I have learned in my personal experience, and I think that’s what makes it more interesting and fun. In my “Child, Family, and Community” I have learned how important it is for a child to be in a safe environment where they can have the opportunity to choose from many choices. Also I, have learned about the variety of programs here in Tulare Country that help families and young kids to better themselves for a better life. During my first semester of college, I felt like this course overshadowed all the others. I faced many challenges, gained better habits, and even increased the value of myself as a scholar. Not only did my professor provide her students with the course material she built a confidence inside of us that will allow us to be able to tackle any task, especially pertaining to any written compositions. The things that I have learned from this course could and will be applied to any and everything I do from here on out, whether that writing an essay or even taking a test. I have often wondered what it would be like to experience the freedom of choosing my own class schedule. This has to be infinitely more stimulating and enjoyable. I am also aware that college will be significantly more challenging, but I have always found it easier to study for a class that interests me. I am willing to accept the fact that as long as I am in school, there will be required courses which may not engender excitement or enthusiasm; however, success should not be as difficult to achieve due to the maturity that is developing during this last year of high school. In addition, I have gained an understanding of the benefit of being well rounded. There is value in all classes taken. It helps to know that even my least favorite subject will contribute to the ultimate goal of personal and career development.
This fall semester of 2014 has been an interesting and learning experience for myself. I haven’t attend school in nearly a decade and was unsure of what to expect from my teachers and myself. I would have to say being in Professor Dybala’s English 1302 to start my school day is interesting. She is an energetic professor and I’m able to feel her passion for teaching and that motivate me to try my best in her class as the rest of my classes. I was driven to do the best of my ability and whatever the outcome might be, I know I did my best.
I am not the kind of person who talks or writes much. Putting my thoughts on papers is something I have always struggled with doing. I believe this class will help me improve on transferring my thoughts to paper, in an organized fashion. I look forward to becoming a better writer because of this class.
I think the project that most impacted me as a learner was the memorial project. This projected made me grow as a learner because I had to work with someone that I had never worked with before. When we started just getting a topic that we both wanted to do was the first thing that made me realize that this project was going make me need to use and learn some new skills. My partner and I had some trouble with trying to come up with a design to show everything we wanted to show for our topic. We had to be patient with each other making sure the we both listing to each other and understanding what and why they wanted to do this. We also has some trouble with communication because we didn’t completely understand what the other wanted making ti hard to finalize our design. Another thing with communication was who was doing what my partner didn’t always know what to do so we would sometimes end up wasting time trying to find something for her to do that she wanted to do. Communicating was something that I really improved on for this project teaching me how to be more specific with what I say so that we don’t get confused later. Over all I think that this memorial project as the one that made me use more of the learner profile skills then any other and helped me improve one one as
Improving writing skills is critical to the college student’s success across all academic disciplines. Writing has become the key to survival in many fields of study. (Pir1, Pir1, & Kesié, 2011) There are several strategies to become an effective college-level writer. An important strategy for a writer is project management.
Projects can be completed individually or as a group and assesses academic learning goals, how well students work together cooperatively, and individual accountability.
