Overall, I am beyond pleased with the opportunities this class provided for me, I have gained priceless knowledge. I was terrified to do that first essay and for good reason, I was highly unprepared. Once I learned a variety of new genres, techniques and ways to improve my writing process, that fear faded.
Writing should have been something so first nature to me, but through the help of Mrs. Hermanson and her positive attitude, eager to teach, and nurturing nature, I felt unafraid to make mistakes, I became more confident in my writing and ready take on the world of writing. English 1010 was exactly the class I needed to improve myself as an assertive reader and writer. This semester, I have learnt not only about genre and genre selection, but also using concise language, sources, improving drafting skills and overcoming writers block. In How to Write Anything, the various genres and sub genres were displayed. This has helped to me to identify the genre of any paper based on the type paper I’m completing. For Example, I know that if I’m completing a product review, the genre of that paper is Evaluation.
Also, I have trouble with when I use a quote from a book how to introduce it and explain why I chose it. I hope to overcome these obstacles next semester. However, I feel my strengths were collecting information after I understood what I was reading and also adding evidence in my papers. Once I took notes on my reading and then read over my notes a couple times it was easier for me to lay out an outline and come up with ideas to talk about. The evidence I would always choose would be quotes from the books, which I feel I picked the right ones to use.

As I complete my portfolio, my main focus is to emphasize the improvements of my writing by placing my worse essays first, followed by my best essays. This process will not only show how well my writing has excelled over the semester but also it will show that the peer review and conference sessions were very beneficial. This course has made realize that I love to write, as opposed to just being good at it. As far as any other information that I feel that shows my improvement as a writer I would like to include any and all of the information that from the reading assignments as well as any in class information that has helped with my writing skills over the semester.
Some of the objectives I only met to a minimum, but those objectives will be fully grasped with further development of my writing. My academic writing has also improved by me taking time to fully understand who my audience will be. I use appropriate tone and language to appeal to my audience, so my thoughts will be understood. Creating an essay that flows with organization and transitional phrases also improves my academic writing by showing I understand what I am writing about. Completing the assignments for English Composition 101 were challenging and sometimes were quite difficult.
I used listing while writing my classify and divide essay and I believe it helped me to stay on topic and keep my writing organized. I used an outline to help me write my compare and contrast essay, and while it did help with organization, it was more complicated than the listing technique. Before this class, I understood purpose was important; however, during this class I have discovered that putting more focus on purpose can result in a more interesting thesis and paper. I have learned to think about purpose before writing my essay, once I have narrowed my topic I ask myself why would anyone want to read my essay. Although I have an outline to guide me through my thought process, grammar usage is a hindrance, which is what I wish to improve on in EN 102 by rebuilding my knowledge of grammar from scratch. Hopefully when I am ready to complete the College Writing Exam, I will have mastered the essential skills of writing and be prepared to continue my college career.
I had to take this course because it was required so I could graduate, but I am glad that it was a requirement. I feel like I have learned so much from these past couple of months that will help me as a writer in the future. I don’t plan on writing much in my future as I plan to be a cosmetologist; however, if I were to have to write a paper I would know how to do so. In this reflective essay I will be discussing the expectations, process, and the progress that I have made while writing the following essays: Illustration Essay about altering public space, Definition Essay with Citations, and the Research Paper on Causes and Effects of Rudeness.
