I selected to put essay #2 and #4 in my portfolio. I chose essay #2 because I enjoyed writing that one more than the first essay. It was more challenging for me to write essay #2 and I am proud of the way it came out. I struggled with every step of that essay, but it was the essay that taught me the most. During that essay, I learned about brainstorming, freewriting, and rhetoric. I loved writing essay #4! I learned so much about myself during that essay. During essay # 3, I had a hard time grasping the concept of citing sources and quotes. I am not sure why it was such a struggle. When writing the last essay, everything suddenly made sense. When I first saw that we had peer responses, I thought it was a bad idea. There were a lot of times where I felt like I was behind my classmates on compression of the writing process. Their insights showed me that some were struggling with the same things. The ones who were not struggling with the same thing had great tips and ideas and visa versa. I loved when we did peer responses. I was able to give some helpful suggestions to my classmates. But, where I got the most out of it was getting the peer responses. They were usually really helpful and gave me the direction I needed. The collaboration of the classroom was one of the best things about taking this …show more content…
I have always been confident in my writing skills. I chose to take an online English course because of that confidence. I quickly learned that my writing was not even close to being what I had thought it was. This class has taught me valuable skills and strategies for writing. I never did more than one draft of an essay prior to this class. It was a hard process to understand and I saw no value to it. It is incredibly valuable! It not only helps with the progression of the paper, but it makes writing easier. I use to get caught up on making the first draft being the only draft. It took me four times as longer to write one page. I never paid attention to my run on sentences before –I didn’t realize they were a problem. As I went through each of the assignments, I saw many mistakes I was making. I was writing how I talk to someone face to face. I would read what I wrote, making the pauses I would make naturally. I learned that where I make those natural pauses, there should be a punctuation mark. usually am so happy that I have skills to combat my run on sentences! I think that anyone can master the art of writing. That doesn’t mean that all those who master writing will write a best-selling

Most of us write in some form every day, so you would expect that most of us would be well practiced and pretty good at writing. I read and write all the time; I have been taken several college courses and nearly all of them require write of some form. However, before taking this class not only was I not a good writer, I knew I wasn’t a good writer. Now I am not saying that I am ready to write my first novel, but I certainly more confident in turning in my college papers. The content of this course and the style of teaching was incredibly beneficial to me. Throughout this course we had multiple assignments that were aimed to improve us as writers. I am sure that everyone took something different from this course, and I am sure that each student took more from some areas than others; however for me there were three major things that I saw that I benefited from most. Our weekly craft lessons, grammar plan, but most of all, observational learning.
Several people have trouble writing college level essays and believe that they are unable to improve their writing skills. In “the Inspired Writer vs. The Real Writer,” Sarah Allen argues how no one is born naturally good at writing. Sarah Allen also states how even professional writers have trouble with the task of writing. Others, such as Lennie Irvin, agree. In Irvin’s article “What is ‘Academic’ Writing?” states how there are misconceptions about writing. Furthermore, Mike Bunn’s article “How to Read Like a Writer” shows ways on how one can improve their writing skills. Allen, Bunn, and Irvin are correct to say how no one is born naturally good writers. Now that we know this, we should find ways to help improve our writing skills, and
Anyone who is doing any type of writing piece has a process. They may not know it but it is there and it exists. It is one’s approach to their piece and how they go about accomplishing it. It has to do with how you write it, how many drafts you do, as well as your revision process if you even have one. My writing process however has room for improvement. A summation of my writing process consist of heavy planning, one draft, and little revisions. Anne Lamott, Shirley Rose, and Kathleen Yancey all drew attention to major points through their writing pieces that support and dispute my writing process. When I read “Proficiency” by Shannon Nichols I really felt for her. I understood and resonated with her story perfectly, especially when she stated “After I failed the test the first time, I began to hate writing and I started to doubt myself. I doubted my ability and the ideas I wrote about.” (83). After I failed my writing assignment I was so embarrassed and didn’t want to write again but obviously, I had to. I always doubt the things I am going to say or which order I am going to organize the essay in. I try so hard to make sure all my sentences are cohesive and all my ideas connect to each other and the main concept but sometimes it just seems that when I keep messing with one little sentence or paragraph I just makes things worse.
The first essay, “Literacy Narrative” was written towards a very general audience. Basically, a narrative is written to whoever reads the work. When I wrote the piece, I was not really focusing on who I was writing to, because the audience was so broad. I was basically telling a story about how I have progressed as a writer over the years. In a sense, I was writing more to myself than to anyone else, because I was reliving personal experiences and rekindling old memories. I was writing for self-discovery. The other part of it was that I was writing to the class members and to the professor as well, because I was telling the story of my life as a writer to other writers who might benefit from the things that I learned. In my next essay piece, “discourse community of vaping”, I was writing to a more limited audience. This piece was very simple and unique. The reason why it was so simple and easy to explain was because I was in the vaping discourse community, and I was prepared since my professor explained the topic thoroughly. Finally, the third piece, “Writing Research” I wrote in a more thorough fashion, to explain how writing by hand and typing have pros and cons. I was writing with those in mind that possibly have had experience with writing books, especially authors and major writers. I included these pieces in my portfolio of this

Writing is a process I’ve grown to despise. Ever since grade school, I’ve had problems trying to express my ideas on paper. My writing process involves thinking about what’s being asked and trying to reflect my thoughts the best way I can on paper, but my thoughts don’t always come out as clear as I want them to be sometimes leaving a question not fully answered. My writing process isn’t a consistent set in stone process, but since being in ENC 1101 I always follow some of the same parameters such as revising my drafts, grammar usage and considering context and audience.
I am sitting in my bed, thinking about my process of writing as I am trying to go through it. It seems the more I think about it, the less I understand it. When I am writing, I don’t think. Which I know, sounds bad. But, I spend every single moment of every single day over thinking, over analyzing, and over assuming every aspect of my life. When I’m writing, I’m free from that for just a little bit. Gradually through the whole semester, Peer Review sessions became a great and positive influence on my writing. It is very helpful to have two people with different views on writing read and critique my paper, and give me feedback on what they think I should improve or correct. We didn’t change peer review groups and I was very delighted because I have gotten a chance to see my group members grow as a writer. When it’s time to revise my paper before I turn it in for a grade, it is very helpful to have some options on what to exactly revise in my paper. In this portfolio reflection essay I will be addressing the five essays I have written for my English 101 class. Along with addressing the five essays I have wrote I also will be stating my strengths and weaknesses of those essays. The five essays this portfolio will include is a diagnostic essay, revised narrative essay, profile essay, evaluation essay, and arguing a position essay. Those five essays I have written over the course of this semester have been very helpful towards my writing skills. Punctuating, staying on topic, my introductions, and conclusions are areas I struggle with when writing papers, but by writing those five papers during this semester has helped me improve on those areas.

It is important to have this skill because it helps us as writers to express feelings and thoughts to other people in a reasonably permanent form. Formal writing forms like essays, research papers, and articles stimulates critically thinking. This helps the writer to learn how to interpret the world around him/her in a meaningful way. In college, professors motivate students to write in a formal, coherent manner, without losing their own voice in the process. The greatest difficulty that I came across doing the first essay was retracing the past, retracing the sadness. Having to bring back sad memories that made my life terrible at the time. Doing the essay, I learned that I have gone through a lot of crap. I was sinking in quicksand and now I stand on the quicksand like it is rock solid. I am proud of myself. I was able to turn my life around and be the person that I am today. I might have the potential to be a good writer someday. People compliment on my writing skills every now and then when I write something long. That makes me feel like a real student. I say that because an old History teacher of mine used to tell kids to be students when they were not doing their work.
Taking a creative writing class was a good way for me to express my thoughts and feelings onto paper, as well as read my other classmates stories. Reading stories created by other people lead me into their mind brain to experience what type of writer they were, it was an overall exquisite class. I believe that every person has a way of expressing who they are through writing stories of their own, fiction is the best way to express your creative imagination. This class that I took for two years helped me become a better writer and helped me understand the types of writers we have.
