My sixteen week class in English 111. I was really nervous about this class. Because English has never been my strong point. This class has hard, but fun all at the same time. I learn a lot from this class. Meanwhile,the first day of class you handed a paper with a question on it. “The first thing I want to say to you who are students is that you must not think of being here to receive an education; instead, you will do much better to think of being here to claim one.” Even though putting my all in what I have learned, claiming my education with hard work because using the skills of the meal plan, as we write to different audiences and learning to be a Critically thinker as I start becoming a critically-Literate Citizenship.
In claiming my education, learning new skills to help me in my life journey. It taught me how to write effectively and proofread. This will help me a lot in my everyday life and in my career field. In the paralegal field writing, any court orders are very important because how you write an order and be translated something different what court order. This class has helped me in a lot of ways. For this purpose, this skill is helpful in my Paralegal field. Critically thinking as I use the skill in a court case using inductive reasoning and deductive reasoning is important. Using Logical fallacies to catch faulty arguments in writing and documents. Being a critically-Literate Citizenship using my skills in literacy. Critical literacy inspires me to understand and questions the audience, the tones of the text , values, and beliefs of written texts, visual , and spoken words. Throughout this course, we had multiple assignments that were aimed at improving us as writers. I am sure that everyone took something different from this course, and I am sure that each student took more from some areas than others; however for me there were three major things that I saw that I benefited from most. Our weekly craft lessons, grammar plan, but most of all, observational learning. Our weekly craft lessons have introduced us to multiple writing strategies. These strategies have helped turn my papers from elementary papers that were written below my expected grade level to papers more on par with my peers.
Without doubt besides to know how to write a sentence, it is vital to know the parts of an essay. In this course I had the opportunity to go through different types of essays that helped me to understand how an introduction, thesis, body paragraphs, and conclusion work. Also, how these parts are connected together and make a different function depending of what type of essay I am writing for example, argumentation, narration, process, or any other. Although, I cannot say I became a professional writer after have learned this points, I can say, I became a better one.
The question of the day is how was Barbara Bileks English composition class and how it helped me better myself as a writer. The class overall was a very informative experience and I feel as I learned a lot. Whenever the class started I considered myself a mediocre at best writer and thought that I would never improve. However, Ms. Bilek taught me to become a better writer by using many techniques that I did not know existed. In high school, we were not taught how to write academically because to them it did not matter. Anything that we had to say was just a paper for them to read and it could not change their minds or influence them in any way. College is different because the university is a research institute meaning that our work if deemed worthy, could be used throughout the university as an example of good quality work or as a new discovery for the modern world. This class helped me in three ways: improving my writing ability, helped in expressing my opinion, and making me a better person in todays society.
My first college English class was ENC 1101 at the State College of Florida. In this course, I learned a vast amount of information about writing, reading, and grammar. When I first walked into ENC 1101 in August, I expected the class to be like any other English class in High School; with rushed busy work and a lot of useless tests and quizzes. However, throughout each week of the semester, Professor Knutsen’s class made me beg to differ. This class was not like any other high school English class. During my first semester of college, I felt like this course overshadowed all the others. I faced many challenges, gained better habits, and even increased the value of myself as a scholar. Not only did my professor provide her students with the course material she built a confidence inside of us that will allow us to be able to tackle any task, especially pertaining to any written compositions. The things that I have learned from this course could and will be applied to any and everything I do from here on out, whether that writing an essay or even taking a test. The first day of my junior year I was extremely overwhelmed by this class; all the essays we were required to write in the first week didn't help much either. However, since the beginning of the year I have learned so many useful and important lessons which have guided my learning throughout this first semester and, I'm assuming, will continue to guide me for the rest of my high school experience and beyond. During this semester I was taught a process of how to write a paper and organize it. I found that all of these responsibilities have made me realize that I could definitely take the next step forward in my academic career. Each new experience I involve myself in has made me continue to grow and constantly learn something new. I am someone who has never really enjoyed English classes in the past and I when I registered for English 101 I only saw it as a requirement to graduate but I really did enjoy this English course and I know that it was something that was worthwhile for me.
Teaching me and every other student how to more full express themselves in writing and to process what they have read helps them better themselves. Overall I feel I have achieved what was set out for me in this class, to gain a better use of the English language and to express myself in my writing in more constructive ways. The ability to clearly communicate my understanding of things in the world makes it easier to get along with others. My life pictorial was really detailed in terms of trying to make the audience understand where I was coming from which made me feel confident that they would enjoy viewing the slideshow presentation. It also made me feel happy to share accomplishments that made me who I am today. I felt a bit overwhelmed with my decision to what I presented because I did not present anything with a tragic event because I felt that it was inappropriate from my perspective. Everyone presented something emotionally hard to process where as my presentation was more of the happy ending and a bit of relief to listen to so everyone would have a chance to settle down their emotions which made me feel at ease to be the relief. I chose to present events in my life that were impactful, like losing 30 pounds. This was something that positively influenced group member but I made it personal by showing my before and after’s which was extremely hard to do. I did feel vulnerable because I was not confident
