When it comes to getting awards at the end of a youth sports season, not every participant should get a trophy because it can instill a lack of motivation and hard work in the children that could follow them their whole lives. Neither should only a select few athletes receive a trophy. Trophies should not be given out as awards at all in youth sports. To help prevent parents and children from getting upset about not getting recognition at the end of the season, an alternative option that should take the place of giving out trophies is giving certificates of participation to the young athletes. By giving every participants a certificate and not only giving a few athletes a trophy over the others, this sense of recognition can be achieved. If this approach is put into action, then it makes all of the young athletes feel equally as proud and good about themselves that they achieved something at the end of the season. Now a counter to this argument may be that, we need to teach children motivation and that not everything is handed to you in life and you need to work for it. I completely agree with that. We need to teach our t=youth that life can be unfair and it takes hard work to get recognized and not everything in life is easy.. But this is not the place for it. We have to remember what we are dealing with here. These are just little kids participating in a sport and in order to keep their confidence level high that will help them in the future, we need to not put any someone else above them making them feel bad about themselves. Besides, these children were on a team where they all worked as one and all helped each other as one.
