Food has been one of the basic needs from birth it is the fuel of human energy. And living in a world that is constantly changing, advancing and the population is growing there is a need for food supply to increase. Back in the olden days, production of food consist of harvesting, hunting, and farming, and usually it would take a long time before the food was ready to be placed at the dinner table. Today, technology has allowed the mass production of food making agriculture advancements thanks to molecular genes. Genetically Modified Organism also known as GMOs are living organisms such as plants or animals whose genetic material has been altered through genetic engineering to produce a desired characteristic or trait. Those who oppose to GMOs believe that, GMOs can cause allergies. A study found in Journal of Toxicology and Environmental Health by Bakshi show that, food Allergy affects approximately 5% of children and 2% of adults in the U.S. and is a significant public health threat. Allergic reactions occur when a harmless substance known as allergens enters the body causing a reaction, in attempt of the body to protect the immune system. An Allergen Database which is independently managed by a panel of internationally recognized experts who review and vote on allergen inclusion, does not list any allergens coming from GMOs. Although there is not any evidence of allergic reactions caused by GMOs confirmed by consumers there are still those who want to ban them.
As the controversy of genetically engineered organisms continues and clearly the positives out weight the negatives, GMOs should not be banned. Endless research has been done and yet there has not yet been evidence of GMOs being harmful. The world is evolving and the population is growing, there is a high demand for food supply. The public should stop taking the name Genetically Engineered Organisms so negatively and instead do their research and how beneficial it they are to the environment and the human
