In the novel, The Lord of the Flies, leadership is one of the main important qualities. If I had to choose between Jack and Ralph to follow in the story, I would choose Ralph. Although he ended up struggling near the end of the story, I still found him to be a good leader. I would choose to follow Ralph because to me, he seemed to be more responsible and more caring. Ralph looked out for the boys and wanted to make shelter for them. Although he was chosen because he was good looking and athletic, he ended up being saner, calm and could control himself more than Jack could. Ralph was nice to Piggy when Jack wasn’t, looked out for him for the most part and stood up for him when Jack would beat him up. I wouldn’t follow Jack as a leader because he was selfish and violent. He would lash out on Piggy and others for the littlest reason. Jack was more focused on hunting and killing more than looking out for the boys and making sure they had a place to keep safe. He also didn’t care about the signal fire which could have saved him from the island, he was more focused on hunting and killing. Jack doesn’t care about other people’s feelings and he was the reason for Simon’s death and didn’t even feel bad for doing so. He only cared that he “killed the beast”, why have leader who cares more about killing than the people he’s leading? I personally have known someone who started out as a good person but once they started getting more popular and when they started to get a high position, they started letting the power get to their head and became really mean.
