Although reports reveal that severely ill COPD patients experience anxiety and affects their quality of life, limited investigations have been done on what this anxiety entails. Taking into consideration the high percentage of mortality in patients with severe COPD, Strang et al. (2014) believe that severe COPD precipitates existential and death-related anxiety. Strang et al. (2014) state that COPD patients have a lesser expectable prognosis than patients who are suffering from disseminated cancer; however, palliative management services are not presented because of the lack of acknowledgement for the need of palliative care in spite of the fact that it is considered a life-threatening condition related to anxiety-aggravating symptoms. Maximum variation sampling was employed, a type of sampling method used in qualitative research, in order to incorporate varying viewpoints on the problem and also classify themes within the sample (Walker, 2015). The achieved sample size of 31 participants seems to be large enough to support the study and attain a …show more content…

These questions will give the authors insights and information about the effect of anxiety to severely ill COPD patients. Methods Patients who were diagnosed with severe COPD were enlisted to join the case study. The participants were from a pulmonary outpatient clinic in the west of Sweden. The case study made use of purposive sampling and a final sample of 31 patients were enrolled for the study. Purposive sampling is usually the technique used by researchers for qualitative study as they wisely choose participants based on the purpose of the study with the hope that each subject will deliver exceptional and rich information for the study (Suen, Huang, & Lee, 2014). Data analysis Two approaches were used in the data analysis of this study, namely latent and manifest content analysis. Latent analysis involves the researcher reading the text and then answers to the research query at hand (Dooley, 2016) whilst manifest analysis is the best method to use for analysing and structuring text from problem-oriented discussion (Berthelsen, & Holge-Hazelton, 2016). The initial stage involved reading through and listening to become aware with the individual discussions (Strang et al., 2014). The text was then sorted and then categorised into three themes. Coding was performed by the first author and validation was done by the co-authors (Strang et al.,
