When a patient walks in to visit the pharmacy they are making a decision about their health care. Patient’s health care decisions should not be limited to choosing their doctor or pharmacy, but should be extended to deciding how that doctor and pharmacist works with them to achieve their personal health goals. Pursuing a career in health care requires a commitment to a long-term formal education, a great deal of debt and a lifelong commitment to continuing education. After completing school a pharmacist has a well-developed set of tools for dealing with patient populations to help them manage their health care. These tools are not acquired to determine patient’s health care needs for them. Often pharmacists and doctors complete their education and believe that education makes them better suited than the patient to evaluate the patient’s needs. No one is better suited to make decisions regarding their body than the patient themselves. My position in health care is one of an advisor rather than a manager. As a pharmacist I will work to educate patients rather so that they can make educated decisions about their health. Educating patients allows them to be more autonomous in their pursuit of health care and also allows them to pursue treatments that are most beneficial to them personally rather than what is most beneficial to the pharmacist, doctor or hospital.
In order to best assist patients we must not only educate patients but we must educate them in a non-persuasive, honest, trustworthy and ethical way. ...en. If I make a mistake in the pharmacy I take every step possible to remedy that mistake. I educate the patient on the possible adverse effects of our mistake, I inform the provider, I remedy the mistake and log it and the steps that led to the mistake to prevent it from happening again. By learning from our mistakes we hold ourselves to the ultimate standard of one day working without error. While this goal may be theoretically unachievable it is what we must strive for as we are working with humans not just with profit margins.
Pharmacy has opened my eyes to what health care is truly all about. It isn’t about making decisions in the best interest of ourselves, or the company we work for. Health care is about the patient. Health care is about educating people so that they can make decisions about their body and receive specialized, personal treatment.

Although equipped with years of schooling, countless clinical experiences, and modern technology, healthcare professionals would accomplish very little without if they do not establish trusting relationships. When a health care provider establishes a trusting with a patient, they are more likely to commit to treatment plans or follow advice. A trusting relationship must also be established between doctors and family members to ensure the best possible solution is achieved for the patient. Moreover, a health care provider is not the sole person in charge of caring for people. He or she is a member of a team of other experienced personnel that must trust each other’s judgments and decisions to create a unified staff dedicated to caring for patients.
Truth in medicine is a big discussion among many medical professionals about how doctors handle the truth. Truth to a patient can be presented in many ways and different doctors have different ways of handling it. Many often believe that patient’s being fully aware of their health; such as a bad diagnosis, could lead to depression compared to not knowing the diagnosis. In today’s society doctor’s are expected to deliver patient’s the whole truth in order for patients to actively make their own health decisions. Shelly K. Schwartz discusses the truth in her essay, Is It Ever Ok to Lie to Patients?. Schwartz argument is that patients should be told the truth about their health and presented and addressed in a way most comfortable to the patient.

Pharmaceutical Care consists of a philosophy of practice, patient care process as well as a patient management system. Pharmaceutical Care has common integrated vocabulary consistent with other patient care practices such as medicine, dentistry and nursing. I pleased to apply to the PharmD program as the program is one area that corresponds to my career dreams. Effective communication between patient and clinician is an important aspect to patient care. Proper communication has a direct positive impact on patient care and adversely poor communication has a direct negative impact on patient care. I will define the seven principles of patient-clinician communication and how I apply these communications with my patients. I will also describe the three methods currently being used to improve interdisciplinary communication and the one method that my area of practice currently uses. Then, I will explain the ethical principles that can be applied to issues in patient-clinician communication. Medication errors made by medical staff bring about consequences of epidemic proportions. Medical staff includes everyone from providers (medical doctors, nurse practitioners and physician assistants) to pharmacists to nurses (registered and practical). Medication errors account for almost 98,000 deaths in the United States yearly (Tzeng, Yin, & Schneider, 2013). This number only reflects the United States, a small percentage in actuality when looking at the whole world. Medical personnel must take responsibility for their actions and with this responsibility comes accountability in their duties of medication administration. Nurses play a major role in medication error prevention and education and this role distinguishes them as reporters of errors.
I think that athletic training, and many careers of the sort, are up and coming. There will always be a need for health care workers and they are paid lots of money. Careers I am interested in pursuing as an adult include things somewhere in health care such as sports medicine, athletic training, or a physician. These careers all center on general medicine. I chose the first two because of my love for sports, so if I am not able to play them in the future I still want to play a role in them. Another reason I choose health care is because I enjoy helping people. This is a growing industry because there will always be a need for doctors, physicians, nurses etc. I am already preparing for a career like this in high school because I am signed up to take Health Science courses throughout and also Honors Anatomy as a science. Also for the first two careers I am playing sports which help me to become familiar with the injuries involved in sports and how to treat some of them just from watching. The further education required for the Sports related jobs (will do report from Athletic training point of view) are a 4-year degree from an accredited college, and you usually also need to be certified by the National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA).

The goal of any medication practice and dispension is to improve the quality of life of the patients while minimizing the medication risk to the patient. Patients are always subject to errors and risk during the medication period. Medication errors include among others prescription errors, dispensing errors, medication administration errors, omission of ordered drugs, timing, and even patient compliance errors (Goldspiel et al., 2015). The patient deserves truth at all time, let alone informed consent. Ethically reasoning, the medical practitioner deserves to accord the patient information and treat them with uttermost care. Recommendations Medical practitioners and the healthcare facility are required to create an environment where nurses and other healthcare practitioners can speak to patients in an open an honest fashion. The government at both levels should encourage better ethics training and communication skills training for all members of the healthcare team to foster better communication with their patients at every level of care. The healthcare facility has to ensure that their ethics framework complies with state and federal statutes with special attention placed on informed consents for the patient.
