Professionalism can be defined as the competence of skills and principles of an individual in a profession. A professional must be knowledgeable in their profession, committed to improvement of one’s knowledge and skills, service oriented, covenantal relationships to patients/patrons, creative, innovative, ethical, accountable and a leader. These competencies are essential for a professional to perform and excel in their profession. As a graduate student and member of my community, the White Coat Ceremony was attributed to professionalism due to its professional attire, and dialogue which evoked a feeling of pride for the profession being entered as well as being relevant to the current generation of student pharmacists. This service is experienced, documented, evaluated and paid for as Pharmaceutical Care. Pharmaceutical Care consists of a philosophy of practice, patient care process as well as a patient management system. Pharmaceutical Care has common integrated vocabulary consistent with other patient care practices such as medicine, dentistry and nursing. Philosophy of pharmaceutical care consists of a description of the social need for the practice, a concise and clear statement of individual practitioner responsibilities to meet this social need, the expectation to be patient-centered and the requirement to function within the caring paradigm. This philosophy of practice is expected and practiced by all health care professionals. The patient care processes must be consistent with the patient care processes of all other health care providers. These processes include the assessment of the client’s pharmaceutical needs, a health care plan that is constructed to meet the specific needs of the client and a process in which evaluates the health care plan to gauge the efficacy of decisions made and actions taken. Pharmaceutical care management system includes all resources needed to manage the client’s needs, which include the space provided, such as a clinic or hospital, an appointment system for patients, appropriate and ethical documentation, reporting of patient care, evaluation of decisions made and actions taken and payment of service
Professionalism is an adherence to a set of values comprising both a formally agreed-upon code of conduct and the informal expectations of colleagues, clients and society. The key values include acting in a patient's interest, responsiveness to the health needs of society, maintaining the highest standards of excellence in the practice of medicine and in the generation and dissemination of knowledge. In addition to medical knowledge and skills, medical professionals should present psychosocial and humanistic qualities such as caring, empathy, humility and compassion, as well as social responsibility and sensitivity to people's culture and beliefs. All these qualities are expected of members of highly trained professions.
Professionalism is defined as one's conduct at work. The quality of professionalism is not restricted to those in occupations with high level of education or high earnings. Any worker regardless of their level of education or occupation should demonstrate a high level of this trait (About.com, 2013). Acting professionally at workplace makes others think of you as reliable, respectful, and competent.
Pharmacists have training and expertise in medication therapy as well as patient care capabilities to assess and respond to patients’ health care and drug-related needs. Pharmacists are important members of the health care team. Pharmacists are well accepted by general people as healthcare personnel who provide knowledge about medication to patient (Perepelkin, 2011) but they also acquire knowledge and training to asses and respond to patients’ healthcare and drug related need. So prescribing is a logical extended role of pharmacist. It is assumed that medicine and dentistry professions dominate the prescribing activity but some other health care professionals such as optometrists, podiatrists, midwives, and nurse practitioners have been granted prescribing rights (Sketris, 2009). It is suitable for pharmacist to expand their professional role by adopting prescribing because they have skill and knowledge to initiate, monitor and adjust drug therapy and develop patient-centered care. As a result to an expanded scope of pharmacy practice, pharmacists in several Canadian, American, and British jurisdictions can prescribe medications (Tonna, Stewart & McCaig, 2008).
Studies have shown that patients fail to adhere and comply with medicines because of lack of understanding. [1] Gordon et al (2007) conducted a study which aimed to identify medication related problems and identify approaches to support patients to manage their medication. Problems with access to and the organisation of services was one of the findings highlighted from the study. Pharmacy can address the issues associated with organisation of services, patient education and engaging patients in decision making about their medicines in the home during consultation.
There are many perceptions of professionalism, some may say it starts with the way you dress, others how you communicate with your patient. This was my first day shadowing a pharmacist at the UC Davis Medical Center during my winter break from college. I witnessed my shadowing pharmacist patiently consulted this patient on multiple medications, ensuring he followed the instructions with his take home prescriptions before discharging from the hospital. During junior year, my thinking on what being a professional was expanded greatly. I was still dressing according to code, coming in on time and making sure to show respect, but I really broadened what I viewed as being a professional. While I did not look up professional practices of the hospital during my time on the unit, I did ask the staff and faculty their policies which govern their interventions. During my time, I found out about the MEWS score, and how this is used to determine the severity of a patient’s condition, and if the need for intervention exists. I also found out about flushing a hep-loc, and really provided privacy to patients. In order for the delivery of care to be patient centered, a holistic approach to care needs to be a standard in ambulatory care. This change would enable the assurance that patients are presented with all options available and enable them to take control of their health.
I’ve reflected on the word professionalism a lot in the last two weeks and how I would define it. The majority of us will have experienced various jobs throughout our lives, each of which would require different skill sets. Regardless of the industry, whatever it may be, every person shares one common objective in his or her career: to succeed. In order for one to succeed, it is imperative that professionalism is demonstrated in all aspects.
