Transportation is one of the most important services that is required by humans today. With the earth becoming more connected every day people are moving from place to place much more often. It is sad, however, that with this change “Motor vehicle accidents are the leading cause of death of teenagers in the U.S.” (Weiland), Most cars still overwhelmingly consume fuel over hybrids or others, and in recent years carbon emissions have been directly linked to the destruction of the environment. It is safe to assume that self-driving cars of the future will be mostly electric as Tesla is currently leading the charge in this advancement. If this is true, one would only have to put instal their own solar panels to never have to pay for gas or power again. In addition, Tesla is also creating a supercharging system in which a self-driving car “can deliver itself to the nearest charging station while you are otherwise occupied” (Galland). This will not only be convenient, but will also cut emissions to zero. In the case that some self-driving cars are not electric or some are still using manual cars that use fuel there still is good news. “Self-driving cars in large number participate in a behavior known as platooning, which would significantly improve traffic conditions and congestion” (“Top 20”). This will save people not only time, but also the fuel that would normally be lost at idle in stopped traffic. Gas will also be conserved through the lack of harsh accelerations and decelerations caused by human error as “it has been shown the more your car operates at a continuous engine speed, the less fuel it consumes” (Bell 5). Like it or not, humans can be unpredictable and in a logical system of roadways, this human aspect can cause major problems. It is shown that many deaths in America can be linked back to automobile accidents. Self-driving cars will make a tremendous impact on this even in the early stages of its implementation. In fact, “81 percent of car crashes are the result of human error” (“Top 20”). This, of course, would be completely nulled if cars drove themselves. It is shown that even “if ten percent of all cars were self-driving, as many as 211,000 accidents would be prevented annually” (Bell 2). This effect is exponentially increased when in the later stages of the technology. The same site also states that “if 90 percent of cars were self-driving… The Eno Centers study found up to 4.2 million accidents would be prevented; 21,700 lives would be preserved and more than 400 billion in related costs would be eliminated” (Bell 2). Alone, this gives enough reason to move to self-driving cars, but the benefits do not stop there. Services created due to these accidents would begin to shrink with them. A self-driving car is an autonomous car, which has the ability to sense its environment and navigating without any human operations. These types of cars are built to make safe and smart decisions on the road. In the past years, automobile companies have begun to introduce advanced driver assistance systems that are capable of parking, switching lanes, and braking in case of an emergency on their own, without the driver’s assistance. Automated vehicles are capable of maneuvering through street traffic, as well as other natural and man-made obstacles along the way. In the past couple years, there has been a greater drive in making cars more technology based. The solution: self-driving cars. There are many different views on these new cars. Personally, I don’t think that they are practical. Self- driving cars are expensive and will not even expunge the risk of car accidents.
Almost 1.3 million people die in road crashes each year; this is around 3,000 deaths a day. While technology is constantly improving, there are still numerous accidents revolving around cars that involve human drivers, not to mention the countless accidents that may occur if a car were to initiate the driving. Such technology is worrying because driving is a skill that does not come naturally. Everyone has to learn how to drive, because there are many different scenarios and instances that a computer can not account for like a human could. Driverless cars should not be continued because it would be too expensive, engineers would have to construct and reinvent new software to prevent accidents and new laws regarding driverless cars would have to be established.

Fortunately, companies like Nissan are focusing on affordability for average consumers, with Volvo following in its footsteps (Fagella). Another concern about self-driving cars is that they will take a substantial amount of jobs away from people that have jobs in transportation, such as taxi and bus drivers. This is no issue of concern, as transportation jobs fade, new jobs will be opened up in the industry. Car companies are planning to create new jobs to accommodate the production and assistance of the new cars, with Hyundai leading the pack expecting to add 3,000 jobs in the upcoming years and General Motors to add over 1,000 new jobs as well (Fagella).

The benefits of self driving cars are that you are going to be able to save more time and you would have hands free and also you can chat with your friends, basically you can do whatever you would like and it would be an advantage on our safety. Companies like Google, Tesla and Nissan, among others, have announced over the past few years that their companies are trying to develop self-driving or autonomous cars [Ref. 1 and 2]. Self-driving cars can provide many benefits to the average consumer. Studies have shown that because computers can react and process information many times faster than a human being, crashes on streets and roads can be decreased with quick and consistent evasion maneuvers by the autonomous car. They can also help maximize fuel economy by calculating the most direct and fastest routes. When the driving of an autonomous car demonstrates that the computer can safely and reliably transport the passengers to their destination, this frees up the passengers to do other things that they would not normally be able to do if they were driving the car manually. For this reason, self-driving cars can help maximize productivity of their passengers.
Fewer crashes would dramatically improve road congestion and traffic conditions. This translates to “less commuting time and more productivity” and will help drivers maximize on fuel usage. As a result of the lessened fuel use, greenhouse gasses from futile idling will be vastly reduced, thus making self-driving cars more environmentally benign that most other cars. Therefore, Self-driving vehicles would essentially eliminate or at the very least dramatically reduce this statistic, saving many lives each year. The self-driving car would cause many people to lose their jobs. The careers that would no longer be needed due to the self-driving car include but are not limited to those who drill oil, taxi drivers, and personal injury lawyers. If self-driving cars were electric, oil drillers would be needed less and a majority could lose their jobs. If there’s self-driving cars, there could easily be a self-driving taxi service. If self-driving cars reduce accidents a majority of personal injury lawyers’ business would disappear.
