Profitability is the main goal of all the enterprises. Without profitability, enterprise will not survive in the long run. Profitability is measured with cost and returns. Cost is the expenses incurred on raising a crop like seed, fertilizer, machinery cost, labor cost, etc. whereas return is the value of output produced from that crop. Profitability means ability to make net returns over all type of costs. Therefore, to measure the profitability, cost and returns of all activities of an enterprise needs to be calculated. If we consider, profitability of a crop. It is appropriate to study the cost of cultivation and the return of major crops grown by the farmers so as to know the income earning capacity of the sample farmers.

Adoption is a decision to make full use of an innovation as the best course of action available or it can be defined as a process in which a firm makes a decision to adopt or to not adopt a specific technology. It is considered to be the backbone of the Nations economy (Nyoni, 2007), providing over 70% of its population with employment (Sarris et al, 2006). Most notably, such an industry is characterized by smallholder farmers, with the average size of cultivated areas ranging from 1 to 3 hectares (Sarris et al, 2006). The planting of crops such as maize, wheat, beans and cassava accounts for over 85% of the cultivated area (Sarris et al, 2006).

Agriculture is a tough field to enter. Farming is no ordinary profession, nor is it cheap. With farming, comes many risks - some even life threatening. As with any other profession, equipment is needed to perform the job effectively. In this field, the equipment is very costly. The prices of the equipment, chemicals, and seed are increasing whereas the prices of the crop are steady decreasing. How are farmers supposed to make a substantial income when the prices are overwhelming? Can the government not allow a set income for farmers each year, in addition to their profit?
