Over the past few years, the professional gaming scene bloomed to new heights. Large sums of prize money offered from lavish tournaments. An example of this was Valve’s DOTA 2 “The International” tournament, sixteen of the best DOTA teams were invited to compete and the champions would gain over a Million dollars. However, what is the definition of a professional gamer? According to the dictionary a professional is a person who participates in a specified activity as a main occupation rather than a pastime (Collins English Dictionary, 2014). Thus, professional gaming is not a good career choice. From my eyes, as casual gamer, professional gaming is bad career choice because of a short career life, unstable income and demanding training.
The first reason why professional gaming is a bad career choice is due to its short career life. For professional gamers it’s common that they retire about the age of twenty-five. This is because their reflexes start to slow down compared to the younger players. For instance, Yao ‘Zhao’ who was a professional DOTA player, retired at the mere age of 24. His gaming career was just over five years. This shows that a professional gamer has an average career life of five to six years. This isn’t enough as for other professional jobs have an average career life of twenty to thirty years under their belt before calling it day on the job.
The second reason why professional gaming is a bad career choice is cause of its unstable income. Professional gamers have two major sources of income, one being tournament prize money and the other being sponsors. It is clear that professional gaming is a true profession in this modern age. However, if somebody is willing to overcome the challenges of short career life, unstable income and demanding training along with the other complexities of a professional gamer, they will make it far in the professional gaming scene. Nonetheless, for many casual players that aspire to be a professional gamer would have to think hard. It’s not just a handful of professional gamers anymore. The scene has expanded and there are tens of thousands professionals and probably a few million aspiring to be so. So what are the odds of winning the big bucks?
Video games are bad. Because when somebody plays and gets off it makes them in a bad mood. But video games are good to kill time. And video games are getting more better and they are getting better graphics. And it looks better like if you were there.

Tom Bissell, whom is the author of the article Extra Lives: Why Video Games Matter starts off his article uniquely by creating a theoretical situation in which he is telling his future children that he missed the 2008 presidential inauguration, because he was playing video games. He talks about Fall Out 3, Oblivion and other games he calls, open world games, which are games with no designated path with the possibilities being almost limitless. Bissell explains how attractive the graphics are along with how interested in the story you can become. He admits how much time he has spent playing and how irritated the games make him at times. Bissell doesn’t clarify anywhere that he believes video games are good or bad for anyone, he just shares his experience with video games for others to think about or relate to.
There is quite a few for being a professional athlete. First the benefit of having a high salary of working your way up to a higher salary. So, what this means is that your original pay will probably already be higher than most peoples in this field and then on top of that you have the opportunity to make even more than you start out with. Next, you'll have access to the best medical that there is now a-days. Either your team could have their very own athletic trainer/injury crew, or you'll already be able to afford top-notch care because of the money you're making. Also, if you're in public and having a good time you can be crazy as you want to be. So, of course they're things that you are not allowed to do on public television however, if you were to do something bad and be fined chances are you will already have enough money to pay for the cost(s) and then be able to move on in life. Then you'll have other money-making opportunities that arise before you such as being able to get sponsored by big sports brands such as Nike, Adidas, or even Under Armour. Many other things may come out of this for example you might eventually be able to have your own name clothing run through one of those sponsorships or maybe even having your own shoe made and sold by that company. Though, why is it that gamers continue to play the games when most games are trying to achieve realism when they could just go outside and experience the reality? Video game have been claimed as addictive, a waste of time, and a distraction. While this does apply to some people, others have found the benefits to playing video games.
