Professional Gaming is a bad Career Choice

Over the past few years, the professional gaming scene bloomed to new heights. Large sums of prize money offered from lavish tournaments. An example of this was Valve’s DOTA 2 “The International” tournament, sixteen of the best DOTA teams were invited to compete and the champions would gain over a Million dollars. However, what is the definition of a professional gamer? According to the dictionary a professional is a person who participates in a specified activity as a main occupation rather than a pastime (Collins English Dictionary, 2014). Thus, professional gaming is not a good career choice. From my eyes, as casual gamer, professional gaming is bad career choice because of a short career life, unstable income and demanding training.
The first reason why professional gaming is a bad career choice is due to its short career life. For professional gamers it’s common that they retire about the age of twenty-five. This is because their reflexes start to slow down compared to the younger players. For instance, Yao ‘Zhao’ who was a professional DOTA player, retired at the mere age of 24. His gaming career was just over five years. This shows that a professional gamer has an average career life of five to six years. This isn’t enough as for other professional jobs have an average career life of twenty to thirty years under their belt before calling it day on the job.
The second reason why professional gaming is a bad career choice is cause of its unstable income. Professional gamers have two major sources of income, one being tournament prize money and the other being sponsors. For some teams they also sell products to gain some extra income but that’s mainly for the big teams. For larger more successful teams they have a larger to...

...n hold, there isn’t much that individual can do after retirement from the international gaming scene. To get more from life, that individual has to backtrack to school and get a professional degree before beginning another professional career.
It is clear that professional gaming is a true profession in this modern age. However, if somebody is willing to overcome the challenges of short career life, unstable income and demanding training along with the other complexities of a professional gamer, they will make it far in the professional gaming scene. Nonetheless, for many casual players that aspire to be a professional gamer would have to think hard. It’s not just a handful of professional gamers anymore. The scene has expanded and there are tens of thousands professionals and probably a few million aspiring to be so. So what are the odds of winning the big bucks?
