Video games have become a hot topic recently. There have been a lot of controversy over whether to play or not to play. The controversy is due to them being arguably more captivating than all other forms of entertainment. Video games narrate an epic tale like no other form of entertainment can. You can become immersed in video games, because of this they are both a highly entertaining escape from the real world and a complete waste of time. Tom Bissell, whom is the author of the article Extra Lives: Why Video Games Matter starts off his article uniquely by creating a theoretical situation in which he is telling his future children that he missed the 2008 presidential inauguration, because he was playing video games. He talks about Fall Out 3, Oblivion and other games he calls, open world games, which are games with no designated path with the possibilities being almost limitless. Bissell explains how attractive the graphics are along with how interested in the story you can become. He admits how much time he has spent playing and how irritated the games make him at times. Bissell doesn’t clarify anywhere that he believes video games are good or bad for anyone, he just shares his experience with video games for others to think about or relate to. They are like most forms of entertainment in which they take hours that the individual did not notice and cannot explain where they went. The difference that comes into play is “the game keeps a running tally of the total one has spent with it” (Bissell, 351-352).The gamer feels the full extent of how much time they sat there, not accomplishing anything in reality. The open world games’ main story may not take long, however the smaller stories included in the game that are said to be half the fun or even a small task such as “picking flowers” take up over half the games’ total time

Video games are a valuable part of the world today. They feed the minds of the creative and provoke the minds of the less creative. Violence, immersion, and an unusual setting are all qualities of a game that create an intense and memorable experience for the player. By demonstrating and improving upon the three qualities that were deemed necessary to create a good game, video games could amount to astonishing heights in the future and bring something new to the table that could surprise us all.
The lights, sounds, the visuals many things come into our minds when we think of video games. It has been seen as a detrimental part of society and as a form of art. In current times some of the biggest events are from video games. Today’s youth in society cannot almost not be spoken of without video games being mentioned at one point. As a form of media that touches our society from young and old, it has a lot of controversy surrounding certain aspects of it.
In 2009, a 14-year old boy shot and killed an innocent bystander riding a bicycle down Chicago Brighton Park. When, later a 15-year-old boy named Andrew Lorek also committed the same murder crime. These heinous acts of manslaughter were to be proven worthy for their gang. Both teens pleaded guilty, but because Andrew Lorek turned fifteen two weeks prior from the offense, he was sentenced to adult court, where his actions caused him to face 28 years in prison. He was due to be released when he is 43. On the other hand, the other boy who was 14, was handled in juvenile court where he was set to have a rehabilitation intervention process and was set to regain his freedom after he turns 21. Videogames are amazing they promote creativity, team-work and social interaction. Video games actually work to increase how good your eyesight is. One study done by scientist’s Daphne Bavelier and her team found that playing five to fifteen hours of action games (e.g., Call of Duty) a week increased how good the participants vision was in two ways "The first way is that they 're actually able to resolve small detail in the context of clutter… The other way that they are better is actually being able to resolve different levels of grey”.
