My professional career goal is to develop and explore innovative research that targets increased energy efficiency and sustainability through improved catalytic materials. While I have no doubt that I want to pursue a research career in this field, I have often viewed the question of why as quite daunting. However, I have come to realize that my primary motivators can be distinctly defined: the prospect of doing something that no person has achieved, an appreciation for the frequently challenging efforts that a successful research project necessitates, and the potential to have meaningful and widespread impact through societal outreach.

While relatively few people find scientific research an enticing and invigorating prospect, I find it to be an incredibly worthwhile challenge, and am inspired to spread that passion to others. As an undergraduate, I undertook many opportunities to expand interest and engage in community outreach. As treasurer of the Chemistry Club, I was afforded many opportunities to share my enthusiasm for scientific research to others. I participated in numerous demonstrations, the most impactful being a demonstration for a group of pre-school students. We prepared "elephant toothpaste" inside of jack-o-lanterns, causing the reaction to erupt from the pumpkins' eyes and mouths. The simultaneously excited, interested, and mystified response of the students was incredible and cemented my passion for outreach. Additionally, I volunteered as a judge for the annual Western Colorado Regional Science Fair from 2012-2015. Listening to the excitement in the young students' voices about when their experiments went well, or the pride of overcoming an unexpected hurdle was invaluable. Interacting with the students allowed me the opportunity to offer advice on getting involved in research and science-focused clubs and activities. Since graduating, I have found several ways to continue outreach. I often return to CMU to discuss post-graduation prospects with current students. Furthermore, I enjoy frequently presenting my research and will do so at several upcoming conferences, including the 2016 ACS National
