An individual’s intellectual curiosity to gain knowledge of the unanswered questions becomes a catalyst for the advancement of a society. Mercer University’s undergraduate student research program challenges a student to discover the unknown and sets a foundation for growth in critical thinking. Unlike any other colleges, Mercer University provides opportunities to turn an imagination into a reality that benefits the lives of the people. Through the research program, I would like to contribute my passion in serving others in need by discovering ways to find a cure for childhood cancer and creating innovative ideas to help the lives affected by cancer.

Mercer On Mission incorporates my two main aspirations in the future: serving and travelling. Community service became a part of my life with the exposure to the help I received at the hospital. Now, I volunteer at the Piedmont Fayette Hospital to assist the patients and their family members with comfort. Moreover, studying abroad with Mercer On Mission will open my mind to the new perspectives with the experience of different cultures and ideas while serving others in need. Cancer is a deadly disease that millions of people die from a year. Many loved ones are killed with little to no warning affecting families across our world. My family happened to be one that was affected by this atrocious disease. This event changed the way my family members and I viewed cancer.
Essay 1: How will you contribute to the mission of the Nurse Corps scholarship program in providing care to underserved communities?
Integrated Mathematical Oncology at the Moffitt Cancer Center. This internship provided me the experience of interacting and acquiring research skills and knowledge from faculty in the mathematical oncology department. As a person who is keen to pursue the medical career, I believe it is important to have a research background because it gives the critical thinking skills necessary to formulate decisions. This internship peaked my interest in pursuing a medical career in the future possibly specializing in oncology.
It is strongly believed that a cure for cancer will be found. Thousands of charities and organizations are raising money to help find a cure. Many charitable events take place such as Relay for Life. In the future we hope and pray that our descendants will not have to worry about this awful disease. Just like Bill Clinton stated “It is now conceivable that our children’s children will know the term cancer only as a constellation of stars.”
Another example of how St. Jude is at the front of the research world is that “St. Jude is a world leader in developing new, improved treatments for children with cancer”. St. Jude successfully treats cancer at a better rate than most hospitals in the world. St Jude is also known as one of the “top national referral center for children with tough-to-treat forms of cancer”.
...forming bench research at Barry University and Weill Cornell Medical College in the Traveler’s Research Fellowship, I have been exposed to the side of medicine where scientists work every day to find cures for diseases and save lives. Experiencing different aspects of medicine has made me a more competent individual to thrive in this field and has deepened my interest and passion to pursue medicine as a career.I believe that those who fight with so little against so much truly need others to help them in their struggle. Being a physician is not only becoming a successful professional. I will work hard to bring about necessary changes to end social disparities, so that more groups in society receive the best healthcare. By making a difference in their lives, I will receive rewarding experiences that are worth all the hard work and sacrifice my chosen career requires.
Penn as an institution is powerfully driven by a nonpareil dedication to medical research. As a firm believer of a well rounded education, I feel pragmatism, community service, and research should accompany an education, and Penn I perceive follows the initiative through wholly.
Leukemia like any other cancer is devastating especially when it affects children and especially when they are too young to understand most of what is happening to their bodies. Facts like these are what should be used to motivate researchers and caregivers to help to make the process of treatment and care for patient dealing with disease one that is pleasant and supportive. The research should be taken seriously and it is hoped that in the future a cure can be found and the cause of the disease can be explained. It is also hoped that achievements like those can give families who are coping with disease or who have lost loved ones to the disease can find closure and solace in knowing that other may not have to go through what they have.
Kids are meant to be happy, play outside, go to school, and have fun. They aren’t meant to sit in hospitals, losing weight by the pound, carrying around IV poles filled with poison. It’s ridiculous and immature that we don’t have a cure for childhood cancer. The only “treatment” that we have is chemotherapy- a chemical that seems to help fight off cancer. Chemo doesn’t just fight off cancer cells though- it fights off healthy cells in your blood, mouth, digestive system, and hair follicles. The most frustrating thing about childhood cancer is that only 4% of federal funding is exclusively dedicated to childhood cancer research. It is true that more adults get diagnosed with cancer than kids, but does that mean that adults are 96% more important than children? The average age of diagnosis for an adult with cancer is age 67, and the average number of years lost is 15. 15 years are definitely many years, but not that many compared to the average number of years lost for a child- 71. Also, age 67 is a lot older than the average age of diagnoses for a child- age 6. At least the adults get to grow up and have the ability to even have cancer- some of these kids can’t even get through a fifth of their lives.
I would like to be a participant in the BOLD initiative summer camp in 2016 because of my burgeoning interest in the field of cancer and cancer study. Since I was a child, I have lost 3 of my grandparents to this horrifying disease. Consequently, I had always wanted to take part in the battle against cancer. Every time I had a day off from school, I went to my mom’s lab and observed all the sophisticated equipment they used to study and advance humanity’s knowledge concerning cancer. Sitting in a cramped room with my mom, I frequently dreamt that one day I would be working to save millions of lives worldwide, like a superhero.
No matter who it happens to, any type of cancer is heart-breaking. However, one’s heart seems to crack a little bit deeper when you hear a child has been diagnosed. Several forms of cancer can arise during childhood. The most common is acute lymphoblastic/lymphocytic leukemia (ALL). In fact, it is so common between the ages 0-14, that people refer to it as childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (Kanwar, 2013). .
When one hears the word “cancer”, thoughts about how their previous life is about to change cloud the mind, but when one hears the word cancer for their child, it is a whole different outlook; the affects of childhood cancer are not only taken on by the patients, but also by their families; the affects can range from emotionally to physically, socially to financially, and even educationally. “Childhood cancer is considered rare, especially compared with adults. Still it’s the leading cause of death in children pre-adolescent, school-aged children” (Report: Childhood Cancer Rates Continue to Rise, but Treatment Helps Drive Down Deaths). Around 12,000 children in the United States are diagnosed with cancer every year and around one in five children that are diagnosed with cancer will die.
Listening often allows me to help others sort through their problems. Combining this trait with my love for working with children, I began mentoring children who had HIV/AIDs on a weekly basis beginning my freshman year. Whether I helped them with their homework or just listened to see how their day went, I tried my best to connect with my pupils. Thus, as a student in SPRINGH, I would be very happy to conduct HIV/AIDS research or anything related to pediatrics since I already interact with many of them on a long term basis. It would be interesting to be able to gain a social and an academic perspective so that I can have a more holistic view. Experiences such as these will shape the kind of educational and personal experiences I want out of the two and a half years I have left. This was an existential experience that brought joy to children’s lives while receiving chemotherapy, as well as gave the parents some free time. Even though this experience greatly benefits the children fighting cancer, their sibling and parents, I can safely say that the children I met at Sunrise Day Camp and Long Island Jewish Cohens Children’s Hospital inspired me and continue to be my role models.
