Pre-settlement, the area now known as Victoria Park was known as ‘Barrambbin”, meaning “windy place” by the Turrbal people. It was an important gathering place for corroborees and the settling of disputes. From the early 1820’s the Traditional Owners were diposessed of the lands as the area was utilised for timber getting and brick-making. Reacting to the choking of cities abroad by industrialisation, a 130 hectare area was reserved as a park in 1859, envisioned as a “Central park” for Brisbane and “the lungs of the city”. The approximately 130 hectare park was encroached upon over the next 58 years as the demands of a growing city saw infrastructure inserted into the landscape and parcels of land sold off to commercial and private interests. …show more content…
