I chose to provide instructions on how to care for post-operative knee replacement patients on day of surgery. My audience is going to be the nurses that come work on my home unit, the ortho/trauma unit. I am one of the five nurses on our unit to care for these patients but due to increased number of people getting knee replacements in our hospital, other nurses such as float nurses, are having to take care of these patients. Therefore, I chose this subject because I can apply it to my place of work. Regarding my design, some of the decisions I made were to use a standard font, a combined grid, and a small amount of white space. Consistency I used Georgia size 12 font for all the text except for the heading, which is larger, and the references, which are much smaller, so the document would not appear scattered. Using standard margins, indentation, and unjustified text throughout simply looked cleaner. I further showed consistency by using horizontal columns at the beginning and at end, but was it not dull due to the two columns in the middle. White space is used around the drain illustrations in order to make pictures stand out. Navigation and Emphasis I used larger, bold numbers for the instructions (main part) and bullets to break down the larger sections. I chose to use red and black bullets to differentiate the instruction and the end sections. Bold is used for the title and the two headings at the end, but they also made the end look cleaner when applied to the different clinicians. I used different shades of blue on the heading of drain pictures to allow for both similarity and contrast. This makes it easier for reader to navigate through text. Italics are used for emphasis where there may be confusion. In our unit we have been having the issue of nurses applying and leaving patients with knee high TEDs instead of thigh high TEDs as ordered, so I used italics to emphasize the
