Growing up college was never brought up or talked about, it was never the topic of choice for conversation. I never thought college was a option for me growing up or that I would ever be where I am today. Both of my parents didn’t complete high school or any schooling therefore they did not go to college. Not only did my immediate family not attend secondary education, but no one in my entire family has had the drive or inspiration to pursue higher education. I have lived and witnessed what life is like without and educational degree my whole life, struggle, addictions, instability, lack of happiness, imprisonment, and criminal activity all of which are some of the negative effects of the lack of good income and a stable job. Although many tend to think going to college and getting a degree is the american dream, that varies, and in most circumstances that isn’t the truth at all. As college prices have soared over the past few decades, and student debt becoming evermore of a factor in the decision of going to college has been increasingly difficult.
When looking at attending class from the perspective of a college student it should hopefully be easy to understand why you should attend. For most students the answer would consist of something along the lines of ‘to better educate myself’ or ‘so I can get a better paying job’, both of which seem plausible. However, those from past generations and those with different demographics might look at this question much differently, due to a college education not always being a necessity to become successful in life. Therefore older generations may have looked at skipping class in a different light than a 20 year-old would today. Since I grew up in a household with two parents who are college graduates, and even two grandparents who had graduated from college, the idea of attending college was never seen as a unique opportunity, but rather as a necessary part of my future. Many Americans today tend to believe that a college education is valuable financially, yet some others strongly oppose this, since they look at the college education as being both time and money consuming. A person who successfully completes a college education may obtain one or all of the following; an associate’s degree after two years, a bachelor’s degree, master’s degree or a PhD. The institutions that provide the college education can be public or private. Whereas a college education might be seen as being very expensive, it actually increases people’s chances of getting higher paying jobs, instills knowledge into them, and raises their enjoyment levels.
By feeling that way high school graduates feel forced to attend college just so people would not criticize. We live in a society where having a Bachelor’s Degree is a big deal now and not having one means that you are not going anywhere in life. Charles argues that society is the reason why this is happening. “Today, if you do not get a Bachelor’s Degree, many people assume it is because you are too dumb or too lazy. And all this because of a degree that seldom has interpretable substantive meaning”. (Murray 253) I agree with Charles because it is true that society forces people to go to college even if college is not the best option for them. For instance, I took a year off of school right after I graduated high school. During that time my family members, like cousins and aunts would ask me, if I was going to college, what I wanted to major in, and why was I not in school? I was always afraid to answer those questions because I still was not sure what I wanted to do and I did not want to get judged if I said something that they did not approve of. Not going to college made me feel ashamed and guilty just because of my intrusive family. They think that just because someone does not attend college they are automatically on the wrong path and dense. My family reinforces the example that Charles Warren makes
During high school, whether it is by a teacher, parent or classmate a student will be advised to go to college. “College is where you find yourself,” they will say. College is made to seem as the place where students will attain a brilliant education, thus making them feel as though once they are done with the schooling, a dependable job of high pay will appear for them. In our society, college is not a scarce option, but rather, an expectation. For many graduating high schoolers, college is the next step. Attaining a college degree is not necessary for creating a life for us as our civilization makes it out to be.
How important is a college education? High school seniors should consider going to college because students who gain a college education often have higher lifetime earnings and a great quantity of other benefits. There are more employers who choose to hire applicants with college degrees. People who lack college degrees are more likely to be limited to basic jobs. Those with a high school education may obtain jobs with good benefits, but college graduates often earn better. Although going to college costs a lot, it is actually true that high school seniors should go to college because they’ll learn more skills that can be applied to their jobs and they’ll have much more benefits while having a career.
In our society, a college education is no longer an option or privilege, but rather a necessity. The main reason people go to college is not because they want to, but because they have to. Guidance counselors and parents pressure most high school seniors to go to college because it is “the right thing to do.” Our society has it in our mind that if a person does not go to college they will not become successful. Many students struggle with college for various reasons, whether it is financial, academics, or personal. We may not fully understand why college students struggle the way they do; however, it does not mean help is unavailable. “Clearly, many of the benefits that accrue from a college education are explained by the knowledge, skills, and contacts that students gain from their time on campus and in the classroom (Brock 2)”. A certain degree of success in life can be related to the amount and quality of education which can also relate to income.
A challenge that all seniors face at the end of their high school career is the decision that will shape the rest of their future. Will it be Harvard, Ivy Tech, or a job at the nearest fast food joint? Of course, there is nothing wrong with not going to college, but for the people of society who plan to marry and have at least three children, it is almost essential. After making this decision, the seniors who choose to attend college must then decide which one. Campus size, housing, nearby activities, and available degrees and study programs are all important traits to consider when searching for the perfect college.
Everyone wants to better themselves in life…right? No one wants to graduate high school and be stuck living with their parents or only make minimal wage. There are plenty of ways to have a better life, one in which is attending college. If a person attends college, they have a more likely chance of making more money, being more successful, and securing their future financially. Going to college not only leaves someone with better opportunities but it can instill in a person responsibilities, persistency and work ethic. All of these things are important unless a person is born into a rich family and are automatically given a job, the rest of civilization has to work and that is where college comes into play.
People have very different reasons on why going to college and getting an education is important for them. Some people go to college because that is what is expected of them, and others go because they have nothing else better to do. However, I am interested in going to college and obtaining a good education because it will benefit my family, my country, and me.
Many years ago I remember my parents telling me that in order for me to become successful a college education was a must. They always told me that if I wasn’t in school I could no longer live at home. Both of my parents attended college but neither of them finished. They did not want me to go down that same road because they really regret not getting their degrees.
Individuals in my generation that decide to go away for college may graduate with a degree but they also graduate with debt and have a hard time finding work in their area of study. College graduates are young and many may not have much experience in their field. It is a bittersweet option to go to college and further your education, I am all for it, but I am not for getting yourself in tons of debt, that will cause you to live your whole life paying off student loans and such. Which is one of the reasons why I chose to stay at home and go to community college, I’m saving money while still getting a great education. In earlier generations, people may not have felt that college was important because they needed a job to support themselves and their families. That is understandable because in the early years becoming an adult meant turning of age, 18, getting a job, moving out and starting your own family, but now turning 18 doesn’t mean you automatically are an adult and can move out and start your own life, I have friends that went to college, have a job but still are not able to move out on their own even in their
Education is a very powerful key to success in modern day American society. More often than not, a person will not be able to find a decent job unless they have graduated from a reputable college with a degree. Because of this change in society, it has brought a lot of pressure by parents for their child to graduate and get a degree. A lot of those who graduate with a degree are not always the best candidate for the job, and even with the degree, they are not even always guaranteed a job. But personally, getting an education shouldn’t be as big of a deal, as it is now. Back in the day, most people did not go to college, none the less graduated from high school; yet they still made it through and learned lots of things from their jobs that they acquired.
