While opposition has raised concerns about the senator's health, the Sanders campaign has put all medical allegations to rest. In a recently released physical examination, Doctor Brian P. Monahan verified that “[Sanders] is in overall very good health and [can be] active in his professional work...without limitation” (quoted in Monahan). Compared to Hillary Clinton’s latent post-concussion syndrome (Neurologist Dr. Daniel Kassicieh), Jeb Bush’s advanced colon polyps and Marco Rubio’s hyperhidrosis, Bernie Sanders is the epitome of health. As a self declared feminist, Bernie Sanders fights alongside nonprofits for the reproductive rights of women nationwide. One champion of this continuing cause is the controversial Planned Parenthood. While some might take objection to the non-profit organization—based on biased preconceptions and fabricated statistics—Planned Parenthood provides a vast range of services far beyond abortions. In fact, between 2012 and 2013, abortions made up a meager 3% of Planned Parenthood’s total operations, the majority of which consisted of STI and STD testing (42%), contraceptives (34%), cancer screenings (9%) and other necessary prenatal operations (11%) (“Our Health. Our Decisions. Our Moment.”). Contrasting against the other candidates who promise to dismantle or defund the nonprofit, Bernie Sanders has announced his plans to expand their budget. As the only candidate with a lifetime of pro-choice voting, the senator firmly believes that “the decision about abortion must remain a decision for the woman and her doctor to make, not the government” (quoted in Sanders). Furthermore, Sanders believes that access to reproductive treatment is vital to our society, and that we “[can not] [return] to the days of backroom abortions, when countless women were maimed or died” or when coat-hanger abortions killed hundreds of thousands of women every year. In an Iowa Supreme Court case, an all male panel of judges ruled that an employer could fire a woman on the basis of being “too attractive” (“Nelson vs. Knight”). Loopholes in New York, Connecticut, Florida, and countless other state’s legislation have allowed for dozens of women to be dismissed from their jobs for being pregnant. Around the country, thousands of sexual harassment and abuse cases are overturned, courts and law enforcement having pressured the victim to give up her claim (“Reporting Rapes”). These are all unacceptable. Major reform is needed to guarantee the safety of women nationwide, and while some candidates have made hollow promises to support women, only Sander’s proposal fully encompases the necessary points that so many others lack. On the forefront of his campaign is the major issue of the wage gap. THIS IS A MAJOR ISSUE, THIS IS HOW HE PLANS ON FIXING IT.
