Throughout our days we have many thoughts, some are good and some are bad! But something important to remember is that what you think about will come out in your life. So it’s really important to keep your mind pure and think about godly and uplifting things. We also have this thought that we need certain things in life to be happy and that’s a lie. I can relate to The Pursuit of Happyness because of my financial struggles, Roar by Katy Perry because there were situations in my life in which I had to remind myself how strong I am, Soul Surfer because as a cheerleader and field hockey player, I had to overcome many injuries, and A Change is Gonna Come by Sam Cooke because the Civil Rights Movement is my history! When I start my journey at an HBCU for the next 4 years, there will be times when I will feel like I want to quit,but each time that I do, I will reflect on each of these artistic works and use them as motivation to remain optimistic with the hopes that something positive is waiting to happen.
My first song I´ve chosen is Sean McGee, song titled My Story. Mainly the song is about him facing different struggles, obstacles, and all the horrible things and situations he´s been in throughout his life. I can connect to this song and the lyrics for many reasons. One of his lines were ¨Do you know how it feels to be left out in the rain¨? And I have faced times like this when I feel like no one is there or have my back, and in the line he´s trying express how it feels to have nobody and be all alone. Also throughout this song he expresses how everyday you wake up your face with something rather it's just a minor issue or something that will greatly impact your life.

Music and literature have been known to either have a connection or some type of influence on each other’s artist. Many musical artist have based songs or pieces off their own favorite or famous literary scenes and or entire books, and many writers use music for inspiration for their work or find ways to incorporate music into their pieces. This relationship between literature and music has probably gone on since the beginning of storytelling and the relationship is still present and somewhat more relevant in today’s society, with so many connectivity to different literature and music being more accessible. There have been instances of a writer turned musicians or musicians turned writers, which has resulted in very interesting art and work being created. An example of this, is Ralph Ellison’s jazz influenced novel, Invisible Man. While also showing that how jazz music influenced Ellison by that the rise of jazz and Ellison’s love and understanding of it could help a jazz band and Invisible Man, be seen as almost identical if side by side.

When most people think of poetry, they either think of a sonnet, limerick, all the way down to a haiku. They also think that a poem is something that must be recited, but in reality a poem can also be sang as a song. Lately more and more songs that are being released have a story behind them, trying to express feelings of loneliness, death, or past experiences. One of the best examples would be rap. Rappers love to tell about “their” life in the city; when the times were rough because they were poor and all the violence going on. But rap isn’t the only type of music that can be interpreted as a poem.
Music has always had an important role in society. It has been used for enjoyment, but also to get feelings and emotions across. Some might say there is a song for everything, and it would be fairly difficult to disagree with this, as songwriters feel the same emotions as their listeners do, write songs about these emotions, produce them, and then let their listeners listen to the song and share the emotion expressed through the lyrics.
Also the songs really present the build up of certain situations on the stage and put a lot of attitude in the specific scene. For example the “ Jet Song” is the first song in the play. This is sung by a jet and it shows how much of a family they are. Another important song that is sung by Tony is “Something is Coming”. Tony sings this song to express his true feelings about the jets and how he has moved on from them. He has a gut feeling that something wonderful is going to take place soon in his life. Tony also sings a song called “Maria” which is about the girl he fell in love with at first sight. Maria sings a song called “ I feel pretty”. She sings this and explains how she is so in love with tony and she describes how nothing will tear her love with him apart. Riff sings a song called “cool” and it express his attitude and how he carries himself in fights, he means well and wants the best for the gang. All of these songs show how music can be a very powerful tool to express feeling and help be in that character 's

Through music we are able to comprehend someone’s personality, their views, their culture, and who they are as an overall person. The music you listen to is a reflection of who you are and your own personal thoughts. As I reflect on the music I listen to I came to the conclusion that I gravitate towards songs that depict the emotions we feel through lyrics while being able to relate it to my own personal experiences.

I relate to this verse because I know what happiness means to me it is my strength and it is my fortress, without happiness I am lost. “Clap along if you feel like happiness is the truth,” (Williams), happiness is true to me, it has brought me many incredible memories into my life and got me through some very rough times, I believe happiness is the truth. Nothing will sink me down no matter what people say or think, “Can’t nothing bring me down,” (Williams). I will not let anyone or anything interfere with my happiness, I will not back down from a challenge, “Well, give me all you got, don’t hold it back,” (Williams verse 2). Happiness is what keeps me going, it’s what makes me the person I am today and it lies within me, “Happiness is everything,” (Steere).
