While attending a Pharmacognosy seminar held at the University of Minnesota by Dr. James R. Fuch, I witnessed the importance of drug kinetics, bioavailability, toxicity and how drugs are administered. Indeed, it is what first directed my curiosity to learn more about applying chemistry to health care and research, which convinced me early on that becoming a clinical research pharmacist is the career path I must take.
Pursuing a career in pharmacy is derived from a deep self-interest in studying pharmacology, medicinal chemistry, and to serve as a bridge for underrepresented Hmong communities. Serving as a bridge for the Hmong community by becoming a pharmacist can help educate the elders about better alternative drugs and bypass the language and cultural barrier. Aside from serving as a bridge to the Hmong communities, I want to focus on clinical chemotherapy research along with Medication Therapy Management. This will be done with the belief that research aids will advance the future development of the profession in regard to applying treatment effectively and uplift future patient care cures by providing comprehensive treatment to patients’ demands.
I am a first-generation Hmong American college student and the first and only one in my family to graduate with a bachelor’s degree at a four-year higher institution. In addition to being a full-time pre-pharmacy major during my time at Metropolitan State University, I also worked about 20 to 30 hours per week as the International Admission Lead where I directed workflow and communicated with international students from twenty different countries. Here I learned the significance of compounding chemotherapeutic drugs, software such as Dosedge and EPIC. I was also wonderfully intrigued as to how pharmacists must have an exceptional eye for detail and limit medication errors by ensuring that the correct dosages have been set up before being administered. In addition, I work as a Pharmacy Account Administrator at United Community Pharmacy. My position there entails recovering finances remittances that get misplaced by the pharmacy, along with addressing patient prescription records on RX30 and account histories. I also support pharmacy technicians in prescription refills, prior authorizations, inventory returns and refill
