My passion lies in helping others in their daily lives through the use of pharmaceutical medicines. A Pharmacists role is very vital to ensure the right medicines are supplied to patients in an effective way to benefit and enhance the lives of others around me.I can directly work with patients as pharmacists are the most accessible members of the healthcare team.
I have gained valuable knowledge of Pharmacy and how medicines work by studying Chemistry, Biology and Maths. Throughout the Chemistry course I have developedanalytical and evaluative skills through numerous experiments and the observations and readings which enhanced my pharmaceutical skills. While studying chemistry at A level I became more interested in the wide array of medicinal drugs. I came across the thalidomide crisis which while reading about it horrified me, yet inspired me even more to become a healthcare professional.

During my work experience I had provided and delivered medicines to the community. A useful tool I had was having the ability to speak Panjabi. As the area I did my work experience mostly speak the language, I was able to fulfil what was asked and to help the patient with their issue at hand. Subsequent to attending a week of chemistry and medicine lectures during the Sutton Trust Summer School programme at St Andrews University and attending master classes at local universities, I know that I am committed to continue with my scientific education. The experience of lectures and the practical investigations in the laboratory have given me an indication of how to analyse and interpret data at such an advanced level. Studying pharmacology would allow me to develop my knowledge to a higher level, learning more about for example how the derivative of the opium poppy, morphine, works by binding to opioid receptors in order to reduce the impulses from nerve cells therefore relieving pain. I would also be able to explore further how high doses of morphine can cause respiratory depression, but more interestingly how these effects can be reversed by a competitive opiate antagonist which can bind to opioid receptors without activating them.
When you ask people what you think when word “pharmacist” come to your mind? They often say pharmacist have to deal with variety of legal drugs. From my personal opinion, when I hear the word “Pharmacist”, I think of helping others. This inspiration came from my Health Science class I took in twelve grade. Until senior year of my high school, I did not know what I wanted to be. But it all changed, after my first shadowing experience at pharmacist station. There I learn about what exactly the pharmacist career is about, what are some of the equipments used in the field and how I can contribute the knowledge I receive here to help others.
In addition to improving my skills, I was able to gain knowledge on many instruments that are used to for the services that the pharmacy provides. This role has involved working with vulnerable people such as young adults, the elderly, children and disability; thus I am able to communicate effectively and with flair with patients. Carrying out these tasks gave me a taster of working in the environment. It advanced my attentiveness in mental health and the different physical health disorders. I became inspired by fellow professionals that are already in the field and are making a difference. These organizations have provided me with a community that could understand my sentiments and at the same time empowers me to strive for the better. Since my early schooling days, science and mathematics have always fascinated me given that all components of the world are explained on the basis of these disciplines. In this regard, Pharmacy which is based on Chemistry and Mathematics has interested me a great deal as it has direct impacts on our daily lives. The more I have become familiar with the chemistry and mathematics knowledge involved in pharmacy, the more I have appreciated its significance in improving the lives of people in the community. Pharmacists play a vital role in our day to day life, as they provide the appropriate prescribed drugs. People become ill, during the year and pharmacist are trustworthy people who can advise you, when is not possible to access the GP. Whilst in secondary school, in Italy, I covered subjects such as: Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Microbiology, Physiology and Biochemistry. I have also studied Italian History and Literature.
I have always taken pride from working with people and supporting them in whichever way I can. I believe that I have an enquiring mind, an interest in people and patience, which are all skills required to be able to communicate well with patients, carers and colleagues as a pharmacist. Therefore, I believe a career in Pharmacy would help me pursue this ambition. I am well aware that providing service and caring can apply to a number of careers, not just in healthcare. However, I enjoy a challenge and would relish upon the continuous learning that Pharmacy provides; although I acknowledge it is a tough career, I feel it would be enormously rewarding for me.
The importance of the becoming a pharmacist should not be about what the career can give a person in monetary value or the amount of accolades one receives. Instead, the career should be about saving and improving human lives and serving the public. Pharmacists keep people healthy, make them feel better, and try to help the public live longer and happier lives as long as possible. From small infant children to the elderly, everyone needs pharmaceutical care. Sometimes it can be a matter of life and death if medication is not available to the public. I enjoy figuring out exactly how much of a medication a doctor prescribed a patient, retrieving the medication, and filling the exact dosage that the patient needs. Personal Statement I am currently a first year pharmacy student at Washington State University College of Pharmacy. During my undergraduate years, I attended University of Washington, and I received my bachelor’s degree in Public Health. My interest in pharmacy started when I first learned about my parents experience at the refugee camp. Many refugees struggled with their health because there were a lack of healthcare professionals. These also influenced my goal of wanting to help the underserved populations.
During the tenure of five years of undergraduate program I studied variety of different courses including Biochemistry, Anatomy, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Pathology, Pharmaceutics, Pharmaceutical Technology, Pharmacognosy, etc. but always found myself more inclined towards pharmacology, physiology and pharmacotherapy of all the different courses I studied and with passing time my interest just grew stronger. Like every career, pharmacists have certain qualities and skills. I feel that I fit many qualities of pharmacists, including an attention to detail, communication skills, and science and mathematic skills. I have also been a perfectionist, paying attention to each detail of my work. This is what helped me stay organized throughout high school, and earn a 4.021 cumulative GPA. Pharmacists must be detail-orientated to ensure their patients receive the right dosage, amount, and type of medication. An error in this could harm the patient, therefore breaking the Hippocratic oath. Furthermore, a pharmacist must pay attention to the patient’s other prescriptions and medical history to avoid any negative reactions. Next, I have earned strong customer service and communication skills from my job at Fareway Food Stores. Since I earned this job in May 2012, I have made it one of my goals to assist and brighten the day of my customers. As a pharmacist, I would need strong communication skills with my patients to fit them with the best prescription possible.
