I got a phone call, a while ago, from my best friend. He said that his mom came into his room crying ; she told him that if he ever got stopped by the police just to put his hands in the air. She was crying uncontrollably,he said that he had never seen her cry like that. That’s when he began to cry. He said that never in his life did he think America could be this blind. He told me that if anything ever happen to him to tell the truth about his story. That hurt me in ways I can not explain. Just the thought of losing him in that way made me realize America

Though most people may think they understand the true meaning behind those words, but there is so much more to it. When we say the black lives matter we are not saying that the lives other races do not matter. We are saying that our lives have never been looked at as of the same value as our caucasian counterparts. We are saying that we are being treated as disposable. Some people say that we fail to acknowledge the percentage of black on black crime is far more than police versus black crime. Though there are people in the community that may go about protesting in the wrong way. The majority of black lives matter protest are peaceful. You would not think that this was the case by the riots that the media shows. They prey on the actions of a few fearful souls and do not acknowledge the reasons behind the heartache. For instance, Tomi Lahren, she makes a living off the amount of views she gets from pissing people off. She likes to address the issues by calling the actions and beliefs of the “Black Lives Matter” movement ignorant and racist. She does not base her speeches on facts rather she feels the need to attack people with ethnocentric opinions. Yes, everyone is entitled to there opinion, but if your opinion is meant to attack and belittle an entire race, maybe you should keep it to yourself. This is just one example of the media spinning things and stating opinions rather than facts. One of the criticisms of this ordeal is that the BLM never put forth the notion that all lives don’t matter. Obviously, all lives matter. But, I think saying all lives matter in response is ignoring the fact that blacks have been disproportionally mistreated, profiled, and arrested more often than whites. I like how Michelle Alexander described the war on drugs as redesigning the racial caste system.
When our parents tell us to “address the police by sir or ma’am, sit up straight, and don’t move too quickly, we ask ourselves why? It is in that moment we realize it is because that the world does not love us and wants us dead. This epiphany hardens us and strips us of our innocence and ability to float through the world. Recently, I came across an article titled “The Truth of ‘Black Lives Matter’”, written by The Editorial Board. The article was published on September 3, 2015, to the New York Times. In the article, The Editorial Board writes about what they believe African Americans are facing as challenges in society today, including the all-too-common police killings of unarmed African-Americans across the country. The rhetoric we hear most from Black Lives Matter is that of police brutality, how it’s a black issue, or how it affects blacks more than whites. Well, this too is factually incorrect. Of the White people living in the U.S., forty-nine percent are killed by police officers, as opposed to the thirty percent of blacks. In multiple different occurrences the protests have angered others more than just gain awareness. Sadly a large number of people are more upset with the stop of traffic and other inconveniences caused by the protests, rather than the deaths of unarmed black men and women. The protest are doing their job to gain attention, but in the eyes of some they are doing it in the wrong way. One big rally cry the movement has had is “hands up, don’t shoot” which came after the shooting of Mike Brown in Ferguson Missouri. It was said that before he was killed he stated “my hands are up, don’t shoot me” which we find out afterward is not true. Anyways hands up don’t shoot, spread like wildfire and grabbed everyone’s attention. It was placed on the big stage, including sporting events, and areas of high traffic. Black Lives Matter is not a movement that believes all lives do not matter; nevertheless, it highlights the fact that black lives are taken for granted by the judicial system. Protests around the world have taken place to fight for justice in the black community. The immense number of deaths of unarmed black men and women is a clear sign that they are more likely to be killed by police than white people. Physical violence and excessive use of force by the U.S. police towards African Americans are seen in the news regularly.
Black Lives Matter is not a bandwagon to hop on, nor is it a hashtag or a slogan. Black Lives Matter is a movement. To not support the movement or to think that the movement does not need support is outright depraved, demeaning and degrading. We too often think that retweeting, tweeting or sharing a photo on social media is supporting the movement and it’s not! This is no longer the 1960’s. We have gained our rights: that is no longer the fight. The fight is receiving justice for our black people, so no effective protesting is no longer sitting at countertops, it is no longer peaceful marching and it is no longer bus boycotting The new protest is to educate ourselves, to show respect, to get involved in the justice system, to raise black lawyers, to vote and to do jury duty. All of these things are needed to benefit the movement in stopping the corruptness in our justice system.
Summer has come to an end and school back in full swing. One is ready to crush the challenges facing a 5th grader. The last bell for recess sounds. Young boys race outside to enjoy the sun’s warmth. Name calling and horse-playing around immediately begins as they plan their weekend fun. Challenging each other to execute silly acts or daring one another to flirt with the girls across the playground. One yells out if you don’t jump from the top you are a sissy. Then one hears ask Julie out first. Recess is almost over when another one yells out he won’t…he’s a gay sissy. Silence has now blanketed the playground and one could hear a pin drop. The protestors that take part in these movements believe that policemen are actually evil and devoted to taking the lives of their innocent people (“The Truth of Black Lives Matter,” 2015). People who support the “Black Lives Matter” movements state that 1960’s civil rights laws have not made enough progress. These laws made three powerful declarations: black lives matter, black citizens matter, and black families matter. The reality in their eyes is that if this were the case, police violence and brutality should not be specifically aimed towards black people. Senator Elizabeth Warren makes a speech about the unfair discrimination and the situations that are going on every second of the day. “This is America, not a war zone, and policing practices in all cities, not just some, need to reflect that” (Fang, 2015). Sherriff Ron Hickman draws out the perspective of police and what he thinks are the unfair practices within America. “We’ve heard black lives matter, all lives matter. Well, cop’s lives matter too. So how about we drop the qualifier and just say lives matter” (Wing, 2015). Shannon J. Miles allegedly shot and killed a deputy, and police have yet to find a motive.
