Should We Breed Designer Dogs?
I’m sure we’ve all heard of a Labradoodle or a Puggle. What about the Malteagle, the Dalmadoodle, the Chug? All of these dog breeds and hundreds more are all crossbreed, hybrid, designer dogs.
A designer dog is a dog bred from two different purebred dogs. Designer dogs are bred to optimize the best qualities of each parent. Designer dogs are also supposed to have the same characteristics and temperament as every other dog of it’s breed.
But why do people want overpriced, hybrid dogs?
Designer dogs are said to be less prone to illnesses and rarely get genetic problems.

For Example: The man who received credit for creating the Labradoodle regrets his own creation because so many Labradoodles are untrainable and don’t have non-allergenic coats.
For example: there are so many poodle crosses having problems with their eyes, hips, elbows and often have a lot of epilepsy. Not to mention they often have fits.
For example: American Bully Breed dogs are bred for certain visual traits instead of medical and physical fitness and healthiness. In this case the American Bully Breed’s large head, big chest and little legs. Unfortunately this often can lead to severe respiratory and orthopaedic problems.
For Example: there are risks to pug crosses because of their flat face shapes. Because of their short muzzles there is a high risk of them having life-long respiratory problems like Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (also known as BOAS). Pit bulls, the most dangerous dog to ever live. People like to train Pit Bulls to fight other dogs until they are either hurt or dead. The owners that train the dogs are usually the ones that make the dog turn out to be vicious and dangerous. “Each year, 1.2 million dogs are euthanized, approximately 40% of whom are Pit Bulls”(Moore). Pit Bulls don’t know better to understand which is right from wrong since they’re being raised up to fight and protect. Pit Bulls aren’t good family dogs due to the power of their strength and that they could attack at any moment.
There are plenty controversial issues about bully breeds and whether they are acceptable or safe dogs to own. In July a woman was mauled in her yard and killed by a dog in Montreal. Due to this unfortunate incident the mayor Denis Coderre created a bill called BSL (Breed-Specific Legislation) which was approved by the legislation. This bill states that determined by their breed or pitbull features “American Pitbull Terriers, Staffordshire Bull Terriers, American Staffordshire Terriers, American Bulldogs or any dog with strains of these breeds” will be unadoptable; they must wear a muzzle in public as well as a leash that’s 4 feet long and in most cases they will be euthanized due to their breed. BSL should be reversed because the real problem is irresponsible dog owners, the irresponsible owners will just switch breeds and any dog has the potential to hurt someone.
Most people agree, in general, that designer babies are taking over and it is it’s a good thing. A designer baby is a human embryo that parents set , to produce desirable traits. According to Opposing Viewpoints Online Collection , Fertility Institutes in Los Angeles offered to let parents select their children’s hair and eye color. Crazy to think you’d be able to build your own baby. The process of creating this designer baby would be embryos modified to predetermine intellect , physical prowess , and beauty. People may question designer babies but “if you think women have the right to control their bodies , then they should be able to make this choice” right? (Citation?) There is a lot of science into creating a designer baby.
There are breeds that can be classified as outlaws. How can that be? It is like judging a book by its cover, and is not that frowned upon? Society has gone so far with this that there are even laws banning pit bulls in certain counties. Fines have been put in place and outrageous insurance policies must be purchased simply to own a dog. A dog is just that, a dog, until someone comes along and makes it into a monster. A dog may be bred to do something and can be trained to do an entirely different thing. For example, pit bulls have been bred to be nanny dogs. They are supposed to protect babies and ultimately care for them like they would their own pups. Some people have taken this instinct and turned it into something horrid. They have twisted the dogs mind into thinking that it has to fight to protect something all the time. Pit bulls have been classified as vicious and harmful animals. This is discrimination and is because of media skewing stories, ignorant people that refuse to listen to hard facts, and public attitudes and opinions. These laws against breeds are unconstitutional; there is no legislative basis for these laws.
Call to Action: Challenge your audience to be a responsible pet consumer and not purchase dogs from pet stores or from the Internet. I encourage you to instead, adopt from their local animal shelter. At an animal shelter, you can find many amazing, healthy animals. If you do buy from a breeder, use extreme caution and ask to see the puppy’s parents. Also, please contact your congressional representative and encourage him or her to help pass the PUPS bill.
Take a moment and picture a dog in your head. What do you see? You may see many different things depending on your own personal encounters with the species. There are many types of dogs out there. Some small, some large, long-haired or short-haired. There are many variances in what a dog can look like. One thing that does not change, or should not change, is the importance for every dog in this world to be given love and affection, no matter its characteristics. This is what leads me to believe that the obsession with producing and owning purebreds needs to come to a halt. Continuing to create these so-called “best dogs” is dangerous to not only the purebred’s health, but also devalues mixed breeds and can cost them their lives in animal shelters where they may never escape. My interest in this topic caused me to look into seeing what other people felt about it.
Dogs that are forced to fight and are conditioned to defend themselves or die. When these dogs get loose, everything is a threat to them and they defend themselves in the name of survival. If golden retrievers were bred and raised with the sole purpose of fighting to the death, they would be just as dangerous as pit bulls. On the contrary, if all pit bulls were bred and treated as family dogs, they would have the same reputation as golden retrievers, if not better, as the statistics found in the temperament test above show.
Dogs are common throughout the world, either as a domestic pet, a protector on a farm, or an assistant for hunting amongst others. Regardless of the reason for having a dog, most people have either owned one for themselves or have known somebody who has owned one at some point in their life. Despite the relative normality of having a dog in your life in one way or another, the reasons for dogs coming into existence are not common knowledge among most people. Throughout a great portion of mankind’s history, dogs have been an essential part of life. The truth is, dogs were actually created in part by man.
Puppy mill breeding causes many health problems for the animals involved. Many dogs have illnesses and diseases because of the environment around them. Many puppy mill operators fail to remove sick dogs from the breeding area and cause other animals to become infected as well. There are many diseases dogs while being in puppy mills. Some of theses diseases are heart disease, kidney disease, endocrine disorders, respiratory disorders and many more. The puppies created often arrive in pet stores and homes with diseases as well. There are many breeds of dogs to choose from some of the most common are golden retriever, German shepherd, and Labrador retriever. Many people can pick almost any breed they are looking for though. The organism I have selected for selective breeding is a retrieve Labrador dog because retrieve Labradors are the most popular breed worldwide. Although the research has made great progress in the development of a healthy large breed companion retrieve Labrador dog, the research is not yet complete, which means that there is still a long way to go. I was in a local pet store buying food for my cat when I started discussing my potential new pet with the shop owner. He informed me that some people try to breed dogs with specific desired traits in mind. In this case it could have led to inbreeding and there was a chance that the dogs would have temperament issues as well. I felt bad for the dogs but I didn't feel comfortable a large dog that could have temperament problems.
