Should We Breed Designer Dogs?

I’m sure we’ve all heard of a Labradoodle or a Puggle. What about the Malteagle, the Dalmadoodle, the Chug? All of these dog breeds and hundreds more are all crossbreed, hybrid, designer dogs.

A designer dog is a dog bred from two different purebred dogs. Designer dogs are bred to optimize the best qualities of each parent. Designer dogs are also supposed to have the same characteristics and temperament as every other dog of it’s breed.

But why do people want overpriced, hybrid dogs?

Designer dogs are said to be less prone to illnesses and rarely get genetic problems.

For Example: The man who received credit for creating the Labradoodle regrets his own creation because so many Labradoodles are untrainable and don’t have non-allergenic coats.

For example: there are so many poodle crosses having problems with their eyes, hips, elbows and often have a lot of epilepsy. Not to mention they often have fits.

For example: American Bully Breed dogs are bred for certain visual traits instead of medical and physical fitness and healthiness. In this case the American Bully Breed’s large head, big chest and little legs. Unfortunately this often can lead to severe respiratory and orthopaedic problems.

For Example: there are risks to pug crosses because of their flat face shapes. Because of their short muzzles there is a high risk of them having life-long respiratory problems like Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (also known as BOAS).
