We Need Breaks!
Let’s just take a minute and visualize Independence Middle School students getting breaks between classes. Mr.Hale please consider the very needed schedule change it would be very appreciated. I’m not talking about thirty minute breaks, I’m talking about fifteen minute breaks. I personally think this is a wonderful idea, because some students have friends in other classes, it would allow time for organization, and it would also allow time for kids who slack on getting their Accelerated Reader points.
To begin with, some students have friends in a different grade. Breaks between classes would be valuable to these students. In the first place, it gives students more time to socialize with their friends. If some students’ best friends or really good friends might be in seventh grade it gives them time to talk with each other longer. Next, some students might fell troubled and need someone they trust to confide in. For example, a student was feeling sad and their friend who is in another grade could come to comfort them. Finally, it would be fun to just talk with your buddies for a little bit of time. A fifteen minute break

Say your locker is so messy that your book bag can’t even fit! So, some students would like time to organize their locker. Also, students have binders that are so full of graded papers, trash, or just stuff you don’t even need. If you have a binder like that, sometimes your binders won’t fit in your book bag. Between classes would be a excellent time to clean out your binder and organize it. Another example, is the breaks would allow time for students to prepare and get ready for their next class. Some papers, other items you need for class or if everything is just all clustered a break between would give students time to get organized. Then students will just have a clean, organized locker, binder, and maybe if they wanted a clean book
Sometimes we forget something in our locker and we have to go back to our locker so we would end up being late. We also like to study for a test or quiz during passing period so, a few extra minutes would help a lot. I like to talk to my friends, that I don’t have classes with, during passing period and I never have time. I also never have enough time to go to the bathroom. Like teachers, students get stressed as well. These are a few reasons longer passing periods would benefit us students.
As I wearily sat in my seat, writing an essay on the importance of electricity in the modern world, I caught myself glancing repeatedly at the clock that was so carefully perched above the teacher’s desk. “Ten minutes, only ten more minutes left until school is over and I get to go home!” I told myself. In most schools, the average school day is about eight hours long. Eight hours of continuously sitting in a chair taking notes during lectures, doing classwork, projects, etc. During these eight hours of school, students deserve a short, outdoor break in which they can isolate themselves from the stress of working all day and just relax. Studies have shown that people who take short breaks throughout the day to do light, outdoor breaks are more productive than those who do not. A short, outdoor break will benefit students due to the fact that students will have time to relax; students will be able to focus more, concentrate, and be more productive; and teachers will have more time to prepare for the next class coming.
Extended class periods and block scheduling will improve student’s grades and can diminish their stress level significantly. A normal day in block scheduling consists of only four classes a day, alternating each day. These classes would last 120 minutes each, with the same 5 minute passing periods in between classes. This scheduling gives teachers more time to explain their lesson. It also gives students time to recover from the late nights due to sports and other activities because they only have four classes a day. Their homework for these classes isn’t due for another day, so they don’t have to stress over getting it done. 120 minute classes combined with blocked scheduling increases the amount of time teachers have for instruction and will overall increase the student’s knowledge, in turn, raising their grades.
Intersessions typically involve school staff and community resources to provide a safety net and an academic boost to avoid failure or enhance achievement. ”(Speck, n.d) Instead of students waiting for summer school to catch up, intersessions stop them from getting that far behind. There are many advantages to the single track calendar. By eliminating the traditional summer break, students are not given the opportunity to forget all the information they have learned, and while in a traditional calendar the few weeks of the school year are typically reviewed, YRE schools can get right down to business.
In addition to that, when the passing period time is set to 10 minutes, students will have a more likely chance to get to class on time. For example, some students have their classes at the front of the school for first period, and then have to go to the back of the school for second period and don’t have enough time and get a tardy for being late . I am convinced that students would do better in school if they had a midday break that allowed them enough time to eat a good meal because they need to recharge their brains with physical activity. This will give students an extra push to have more energy when they return back to class. Critics may exaggerate that this method will do nothing but make students drained and exhausted personally I disagree. A mid-day break for an hour will do nothing but strengthen us, all of us. During cognitive development it is important that teachers allow time for students to have breaks in between classroom tasks such as recess and other extracurricular activities. Learning large amounts of material is easier for children to understand when it is taken in as chunks. Assign children with short tasks and switch from demanding activities to less demanding activities (Biehler & Snowman, 2000).
In 2008, there were more than 1,977,000 deaths that were caused by preventable risk factors. The top 3 causes of death in the United States are diseases of the heart, malignant neoplasms (cancer), and chronic lower respiratory diseases. All these diseases are preventable. People need to start paying more attention to what they’re eating, exercising more, giving up unhealthy behaviors and taking care of our mental health.
Recently drug addiction in the United States is at an all-time high, especially among teens. The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University found that teens who abuse prescription drugs are twice as likely to use alcohol, five times more likely to use marijuana, and twelve to twenty times more likely to use illegal street drugs such as heroin, ecstasy and cocaine than teens who do not abuse prescription drugs. Forty five percent of drug overdose deaths, in teens are attributed to the abuse of prescription drugs. The illegal abuse of prescription drugs starts at home in a teen’s own bathroom. Children can burn off bottled up energy at recess that they have accumulated while sitting through their teacher’s lessons. Lahey mentions that “studies have found that students who enjoy the benefit of recess are more attentive once they return to class”. This is helpful because the child will be focused on what they are learning instead of fidgeting in their chair. Also, providing breaks to students while they are learning can result in longer attention spans. Recess is a break that recharges the brain and allows elementary students to control their desire to adventure. Young children are easily distracted, so recess regulates this by providing them with their own free time. Students become more self-contained after they return from recess due to their tiredness. This is useful in class because children will be less hyperactive. The absence of recess would not permit students to learn self-control
Taking such a long break from class can lead to students losing their train of thought. If we lose our train of thought, we will be totally out of it during our next class. This also leads to students wanting to cut. What if someone didn 't feel like staying the three hours and gets exhausted and just leaves? Even if we went the three hours, we would be exhausted and most likely fall asleep in class. I know the counter argument would be why doesn 't the student do some homework or try to understand the lesson he just had during his break. But in reality, which student uses their break for school work? Its called a break for a reason. In high school, we weren’t given breaks. All we had was a half hour to an hour of lunch to relieve ourselves. But it wasn 't too much time to let us lose our train of thought. Due to that, I don 't think our class should be so widely separated. This all leads back to the fact that our professors should take attendance, and make sure their students don 't fall asleep in

By getting a break, it can help them refocus and get more done. Additionally, The American Heart News Association, a news organization stated, “After recess, for children or after a corresponding break time for adolescents, students are more attentive and better able to perform cognitively.” This quote proves that getting a break in between is better than not getting one because a break helps kids refocus, instead of them not paying attention and getting nothing done. Why, though, are breaks important from an educational standpoint? One reason is that they lightens students' stress loads. College is stressful enough with breaks; without them, students have no way to recuperate from the stress of classes. During Montana Tech's fall semester, there are over two months of straight classes that contain no breaks at all. During the spring semester, there are two more large gaps between breaks, one of which is also over two months long. Although weekends do help, these are often used for studying and homework and do little to ease the students' stress. Many students begin to dislike their classes because of the stress they cause, and as a result, some put less effort into their studying.
