Littering is a growing problem that happens all around the world. This is an issue that affects our lives, animal's lives, and even the Earth's life. Many people have gotten so used to seeing trash in ditches and on the sides of roads that they don't even notice it anymore. A big part of the problem is laziness. Almost every day you can see someone throwing a piece of trash on the ground or out of their car window. Holding on to your trash until it can be thrown away into a garbage can make a huge difference. Sometimes people don't even realize they're littering. Cigarettes are the most littered items in America and have been for many years. Every person who has been to the beach knows how bad this problem has become. It will attach to any surface and remain there until it is removed or treated by chemicals. Gum can't be digested so it can harm small animals such as birds and fish if consumed. The best way to dispose of your chewed up gum is by wrapping it in paper and putting it in a trash can. Making things biodegradable, such as plastic, might seem like an easy fix to littering but it may actually be making things worse. This makes people feel like it's okay to throw biodegradable material anywhere they please thinking it will just decompose. This material needs to be placed in the right environment with certain weather and humidity conditions in order for it to break down. Littering not only effects our lives, but the lives of animals as well. You may not think dropping a water bottle outside will do any real damage but that piece of trash can be carried into your local waterways and possibly end up in an animals mouth. Almost 100,000 of the animals found in the ocean are killed by littering each year. All it takes to save an innocent animal's life is a few extra steps to the trash
