Introduction Joseph is an eight year old boy that has been living in a foster home for 7 months. He comes from a low-income family that often times are homeless. He was taken away from his parents due to their heavy drug addiction. He does not have any relatives that live close by him so his only option is to stay in foster care until a relative is willing to take him in. Joseph’s teachers states that has been falling behind academically in school; however, he did not have behavior issue. Joseph’s teacher also states that he sits alone during recess and does not talk to any of his peers. They are very vulnerable and have a lot of things they are struggling with. One issue that we should be concerned about is making sure the foster homes we place them in are an actual environment where they can thrive in and succeed. In a previous class I watched a documentary about children in foster care and they often times switch to different homes because of the homes they are placed may be abusive, they may not have a caring parent, or they just do not want to be there. I believe the people that the children are placed with need to go through a thorough background check and monitored more often. In the documentary the child was abused however it took her caseworker a while to notice the abuse. The child was placed in a foster home where it took her a while to thrive and do better in the home. I also believe that we should only let the child visit with their parent(s) if they feel comfortable doing so. Often time’s children may not feel comfortable seeing their parents however they are forced to see them. The parents may actually want to get their children back or they may attend the meetings to say they are trying and show the courts that they are putting in an effort. Children in foster care are often times uncomfortable coming into the shelter so allowing them to see the person that made them come into this situation may not be beneficial to
