Everybody goes to school for an education. Of course, one would like to assume that the schools are a safe place for kids. However, bullying remains a significant issue in schools that affects a large quantity of students. Bullying can take a serious toll on the victim’s physical and mental health. Yet, a significant amount of students continue to be bullied in school, even after seeking help from a teacher. A number of teachers are unsure of how to resolve issues cause by bullying. Some teachers propose different methods on a “trial and error” basis, while others punish the student responsible for the bullying. According to Esselmont (2014), “…71% of school shooters had been victims of bullying.” (p. 1) Victims of bullying have also been shown to be more likely to carry weapons to school. School violence is a major issue that is gathering more attention every day. Most of the perpetrators of school violence have been revealed to be victims of bullying. A possible reason for the link between bullying victimization and school violence is retaliation. The author determined that anger is the most common response to being bullied. The most common way a victim dealt with this anger, was a desire to get back at the bullies. Thus, bullying not only causes problems for the victim, but this victim may take out his or her anger on the school. Ringwalt and Shamblen did a study to see if being the victim of a bully had an association with substance abuse. The researchers got the information from self-reported surveys from more than 50,000 students in grades 6 through 11 in Oregon. The survey essentially asked whether the student was bullied in the last 30 days, and if the student abused any substances in the last 30 days. In short, the study revealed a moderate correlation between bullying victimization and substance abuse. This is not unexpected, but does supply statistics to back up the hypothesis that victims of bullying can cause emotional and physical problems. So, school personnel should realize that students who are bullied have a slightly elevated risk of abusing substances. Most likely, these students who are bullied try to “escape” their problems by abusing substances. That is an unhealthy thing for these students to do, and shows that students who are bullied can develop emotional or mental issues because of it.
