Growing up I always thought I wanted to be doctor. I wanted to help people, I wanted to save them. As I grew up however my focus shifted away from wanting to be a doctor and towards being an Architect. Soon however I realized that what I really wanted to do was create things as well as help people. As I racked my brain to try and figure out what I could do with my life that would encompass both aspects I searched for in a job I stumbled upon Biomedical Engineering. Biomedical Engineering takes both the medical field and the engineering field and combines it into one. As stated by the United States Department of Labor “Biomedical Engineers combine engineering principles with medical and biological sciences to design and create equipment, devices, …show more content…

The problem Biomedical Engineers face now is that the creation process is so intricate and time consuming that the artificially made organs end up being way too expensive to be a viable solution. The process the biomedical engineers face and one that they and hopefully I will face for years is how to create an artificial organ that functions properly but is also cost effective. In order to find a solution to this problem the Biomedical Engineering community is going to have to think outside of the box. Thinking outside of the box to solve a problem is, I think, one of the most useful skills you learn whilst being taught math. This just goes to show that even though you aren’t always crunching numbers, math is always surrounding …show more content…

If you are off by even a tenth of an inch, it could cause someone's death. When learning math throughout school you are taught to be precise with your calculations which ends up being a very important skill if you choose to go into Biomedical Engineering. Biomedical Engineers spend hours writing up precise plans and measurements for artificial organs, limbs and many other devices, if you are not someone with a strong math background then most likely you will not be used to making such precise measurements. In this case, whether or not you have a strong math background creates a life or death
