Growing up eating animals was something that was normal. Breakfast, lunch and dinner. Eggs, bacon and steak. Animals are creatures that I grew up around not only on my food, but also on my grandfather's farm. Hearing pigs getting slaughter in the next room. Smelling how their hair were getting burned so it was easier to cut through their skin and the hair would not get on the meat. Hearing the little pig cried for help. Then a sudden stop. A knife had gone through the little pig artery, a squealed followed by a silence and a bunch of men celebrating the dead of this defenseless little creature. However, rights cannot be determined by the ability to think or intelligence to determine what individuals deserve rights. Since it begs the question to think about babies, mentally disabled or mentally ill who are not able to think would have no rights either. The issue is not animals having the same rights as people, the issue is humans having the right to exploit animals for our purposes. Animal welfare is a belief that humans have the right to use animals for our own purposes as long as they are treated humanely, this belief might want to see the cruel practices eliminated. In contrary, animal rights state that humans do not have the right to slaughter animals for food no matter how well they are treated while they are alive. Another key point is the ethical dilemma that animals and humans are similar since both can feel pain and suffering, in other words being sentient. Since humans have moral status, then animals should have moral status as well. The philosopher Peter Singer argues that animal moral status shares one principal, "is wrong to cause suffering and is wrong to discriminate against others by giving greater importance to your own group." This principle indicates how humans should treat animals like a human. Individuals importance is subjective to what is important to the person. One person may find their pets more important than a stranger and that does not give the right to kill and eat the
