Wildlife preservation is one of the most supported topics in society today. It is for that reason that many ponder the recent disapproval of hunting wild game. Jim Fowler once said, “The quicker we humans learn that saving open space and wildlife is critical to our welfare and quality of life, maybe we'll start thinking of doing something about it.” Hunting wild game poses many benefits to society as a whole, the hunters, and the wild game itself. To society, hunting brings in much needed revenue and jobs. Also, if people we're no longer able to access essentials such as food due to a catastrophic event, hunting more well equips the public to adapt and survive. Each year, the United States go further into national debt. Hunting wild game contributes to the helping of this national debt. In order to hunt, hunters must buy a license, among the other equipment needed. With all of these costs, hunters put a large amount of money back into our economy each year. The International Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies found that hunters contribute 67 billion dollars in economic output (LaBarbera, 2002). Although this seems minute compared to our enormous national debt, anything can help. Also, along with depression comes unemployment. Hunting can provide for many jobs and along with these jobs comes more people able to spend money, boosting the economy even more. With more money being put into the economy, the government can tax those with these jobs, creating even more revenue. In a recent study performed by the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF), it was found that hunting, through money spent and jobs directly related to hunting, created an estimated 680,300 jobs in the United States alone (Allen, Southwick, & Howlett, 2013). Many farmers across the country are feeling the wake of overpopulation in common animals in their areas. These farmers experience mass damage to their agricultural crops and livestock. One main reason animals are at an advantage is the limitation of their population. Along with the urbanization of our country comes less room for these animals. With less room many species have become overpopulated and proven to be at too large of a population for their habitat to withstand. Hunting these animals ensures that the population stays under control and can be easily managed. When wild game animals become too overcrowded, many hardships come to them. The Department of Natural Resources of Illinois performed research on what can happen to animals when they become too numerous. They found that the animals become subject to various diseases such as mange, rabies, and distemper. When these diseases hit, a large number of mass die-offs were reported (Rauner, 2015).
