Before I started school at the University of Mississippi I worked for a nursing home and thought that my field of study when I became a social worker would be in Gerontology. Social work students have different opportunities to shadow social workers in different settings and because of this practice my interests have expanded in the social work field. When I graduate and become a social worker I am very interested in working to help protect children. After our class visited the Department of Human Services (DHS), I like most of my classmates believed the main goal of the DHS was to remove children from their unsafe homes. I did not understand what constitutional rights were being violated before the lawsuit but under the settlement agreement it is ordered that children entering custody are required to receive a health screen evaluation within seventy-two hours after placement and a comprehensive medical examination within thirty-days. Also periodic dental exams for foster children 3 years and older. Children are also to be provided an assessment for mental health issues at age 4 and older. These are just a few of the agreements in the settlement. I like many of my classmates are glad that there have been some changes in some of the policies within the DHS system. The gratification of knowing one can help keep a child safe makes up for the minimal amount of pay one gets just starting out at this job. Even though, if you calculate the other benefits with the monetary benefits it is a decent income for a social worker just finishing school. The DHS also offers the opportunity for BSW social workers interested in furthering their education, an alternative route. The department offers to pay for the social worker to get their MSW in exchange the worker agrees to work for DHS for five years. It takes the worker around three years to complete their degree but if a student is interested in getting their degree and working at the same time it is a good option to
