Ever since I have used a computer, I have been captivated by the incredible world of the digital industry. One of the earliest memories I have was to use a floppy disk, the idea of capturing something virtual and integrating it into a physical object fascinated me. As technology has advanced so has its implements, I recall the floppy disk being as big as my hand and to now hold a memory stick smaller than my thumb with 91022.2 times more storage capacity just astonishes me. The advancement of computers at this exponential rate makes me wonder what amazing phenomena could occur in the next century and by studying computer science I can be part of this exponential growth.
The A-levels subjects I chose have all been helping me to develop an understanding of not only the subject, but also a great deal around it. Maths and Physics are supporting me to improve my analytical and evaluative skills and have also aided me to enhance my logical thinking. Physics has introduced my curiosity to mind boggling phenomena, such as superconductivity and the effect it can have in the field of computers...
My knowledge from A-Level Biology and Psychology has allowed me to appreciate and understand aspects of the human anatomy and physiology and also how people interact individually and with the wider society. Studying Chemistry and Maths has been both challenging but intriguing and I have been able to adapt the skills of paying attention to detail, managing, prioritising and conducting extensive research via these courses.
Computers are used by many different people in many different ways. This era particularly has progressed extremely fast in computer use and the types of computers people use. One particular field that caught my eye was computer uses for medical purposes. I doubt that the medical field had the advancements and usage of computers many years before us but now they seem to be more releveant in every aspect of our life even health wise. From health monitors, or even better ways to keep health records computers are becoming essential in this field.
University has always appealed to me because of the wealth of experiences it has to offer as a student. Although I enjoy English Literature and Chemistry: two of my 'A level´ subjects, I am especially keen to study Biology and Psychology. For me, the main appeal of the course lies in the variety of topics that will be covered. The aspects of Biology I find particularly interesting are neuroscience and how the immune system functions and responds. In Psychology, I am very interested in what makes people unique and how different factors shape our personality.
Biology and Chemistry have helped me further my interest and develop my analytical thinking. My previous studies of Maths and English have given me access to skills such as critical thinking which have been useful in the UKCAT as it allowed me to gain aptitude at tasks such as thinking and understanding. Also, my studies in Geography have enabled me to gain valuable analysis skills through the interpretation of texts into my assignment in Higher Geography which highlights my skill for interpretation. I received an endeavor award for my persistent effort and hard work throughout the year.
Learning is a continuous process and the day that you stop learning is the day that you start decreasing your rewards and lower levels of satisfaction. My ardent desire to acquire knowledge has motivated me to pursue higher studies at graduate level, and to take up a career in research in industry. I have taken this decision after carefully considering my academic background, profound interest in research and strong aptitude for problem solving.
