When we take our next step, and bring ourselves that much closer to our dreams, we never forget our beginnings. For me, as I embark upon earning my DDS, I think on my introduction to medicine, which came when I was just five years old. It was my birthday, and how fitting, the gift of a child’s medical kit. At the same time, growing up in an overcrowded, bustling town in India showed me that skilled and compassionate medical care was needed and should not be a privilege, but a right.Knowing that a situation is wrong is never enough, and thankfully, my uncle – a skilled and respected dentist himself – and his colleagues invited me to volunteer at a free dental camp they organized. From one patient to another, I saw the effects of years of oral health neglect, and the results of a general lack of preventive dental care education. I was shocked, but inspired, forever changed by this experience, and resolute that I would do all I could to help make a difference in patients’ lives.
The field of dentistry at every turn has given me the greatest sense of meaning and direction in every aspect of my life. It is very fulfilling to see a patient’s self-confidence and self-esteem blossom when they are relieved of pain or have their smile restored. Furthermore, a year of immersive shadowships in three separate dental clinics here in the United States, has given me insights into general dentistry, oral and maxillofacial surgery as well as a pediatric dentistry.
