My ambition for studying a degree for dental hygiene propagated during my research about it. I am very much aware of the importance of the hygienist's role in maintaining the patient's health as I have already experienced it during work experience in a dental surgery. I enjoy helping patients and I am able to communicate with different types of people. I can handle difficult situations in a small period of time without hesitation. I read scientific journals and enjoy researching about science and learning about the human body to develop my knowledge. I am currently studying BTEC level 3 sciences at St Albans Academy. During my Duke of Edinburgh expedition I succeeded in communicating well with people that I did not previously know and was able to motivate others under time pressures to be able to get back to the camp before dark. I am a very hard worker and always like to help others. Although I believe I am very independent, I also flourish when working with a team. During my work experience at Concord Youth Centre I worked well in a team and led a group of youths from the community to prepare and present a presentation about community cohesion. Before the presentation I first had to advise and present my knowledge to the young people. My presentation and public speaking skills, as well as my confidence, has grown and developed during my time at sixth form. I am a very confident speaker as further shown through my participation in a Conference against FGM (Female Genital Mutilation) at which I read and presented a poem. Not only is this career interesting and flexible, but it is also very helpful towards others and usually pays pretty well too. Many people become dental hygienists because of the easy education requirements and high demand for their jobs. These days, dental hygienists are more respected and being hired more rapidly due to the fact that more and more people are keeping and taking better care of their teeth. Ever since I was a little kid, I have loved going to the dentist. I was never scared, not even when I went for my fillings and wisdom teeth extractions. Mostly all the hygienist I have had so far have been friendly, patient and always ready to help with a big smile on their face and that is what attracted me towards this career. I want to help people in need that cannot afford the services.
It’s been a long time since the last narrative and a lot has changed. The internship with the dental hygienist failed miserably. After three sessions, my mentor just stopped communicating and cut all ties with me. I attempted to email her multiple times but I remained unheard. So, I had to find a way to troubleshoot and look for another mentor and place to intern at.
In my experiences, I have found pinpointing a career and channeling my aspirations extremely difficult tasks. That being said, like most difficult endeavors in life, there exists extraordinary reward. Through research, soul searching, and trial and error, I realize that I aspire to make an impact in as many people’s lives as possible, while still taking care of myself and my future family. That is where dentistry comes in to play.

I can remember coming to school and hearing all my classmates talk about how much they hated going to the dentist. Going to the dentist was one thing that I have always loved to do. The sound of the tools and just the smell of the clinic was never a bad atmosphere to me, I actually enjoy the dentist. Laura was my first dental hygienist from as far back as I can remember, and she had the whitest teeth I have ever seen! I have honestly came to the conclusion that I am obsessed with teeth. With this being said, I have always felt and known that I wanted to be a dental hygienist. I am currently in my first year here at Community College getting my preq for dental hygiene. I always get the question, “Why would you want to look in somebody’s mouth all day?” After I hear this question and then I start thinking to myself. The history of a Dental Hygienist is very riveting. This profession was first founded in 1913 by Dr. Fones when he created the first Dental Hygiene education program in Bridgeport, Connecticut. In 1906 Fones trained Irene Newman the basics, and she was then the first Dental Hygienist in the world. Later, the founding of the first Dental Hygienist training program, many more were founded. I always wanted to be a dentist, but as I advanced in my education, I noticed the injustices in healthcare surrounding me, I realized that I want to dedicate myself to more than just simple office visits, but rather to make an impact in my field and the lives of those around me and I truly believe public health is the greatest tool that enables me to make that impact I desire.
