Personal Statement: A Career In Physical Therapy

Playing a sport for the last 16 years, from the youth to collegiate level, has taught me skills that I can use as a student of physical therapy at the University of Washington. One important skill that I have learned is how to work with many different types of people. Within this environment, communication, team work and motivation are necessary for the success of a group. Everyone comes from a different background. The ideas, customs, and beliefs a person holds are what make them unique, and it provides an alternative perspective to every situation. As a student, I will meet people who will have different values, but I still need to be culturally sensitive and respect their ideas even if I may not agree with them. Being able to objectively listen to others when they have a differing opinions from myself will help me be successful at UW. I have also learned leadership qualities from my time as a captain of my collegiate softball team and a Vice President in my sorority. I first started in high school as a patient myself. As an athlete, I have sustained various injuries that have needed rehabilitation in a physical therapy office. My most significant injury required 5 months of intensive therapy to rehabilitate my lower back. During this time, I began to understand the requirements of a successful physical therapist, as well as what is required of patients throughout the rehabilitation process. Compliance to exercises and limitations in activity will help a person to heal the fastest. Although, it may be hard to do your exercises every day, or prevent yourself from participating in that one activity all of your other friends are doing. I believe that this will help me become a successful clinician as my personal experiences will help me to relate to patients as they go through their own
